  1. :bounce: Hi guys, thanks for the wonderful help. Have found that another pair have laid eggs on another stone so have put both stones in a clear plastic caulender (don't have spare tank at the moment) with airstone and am floating it on top of the main tank. Should I put some java moss or some sort of cover over the top so the eggs don't get too much light when I switch the tank light on in the morning, or will the light not affect the eggs? Got 6 bolivian rams from the neat little pet shop in Taupo last Wednesday and didn't think they'd be mating up just yet. Thanks again for your help. Love this site.
  2. Okay, thanks for that. I don't have any methylene blue either. Got some tonic that does alsorts but don't think that's the same somehow. :-?
  3. Hi everyone, just found a rock that my new bolivian butterfly rams have covered in eggs. They are doing a good job guarding them but being in a community tank, do you think they will be ok.
  4. Hi again, thanks for the info on platys and swordtails, have now separated them and put the swordtails back in other tank.
  5. Thanks for your replies. I love reading them. Very helpful and a lot of the time I have a bit of a giggle at some of the replies/topics.
  6. Hi Ian, thanks for your reply. Have now put platy, swordtail male and female and 2 clown loaches in smaller tank. Am still learning about tropical fish and love reading all the topics posted on AFNZ, but have to disagree with you about no one fish getting picked on all the time. This little red female platy was so harrassed by the two males she would only come out of hiding when I would feed the others or dart out of one hiding place to get to another. The cream platy male had even damaged her fins slightly. Again thanks for your reply.
  7. I have a nice deep red female platty that seems to have problems with some of the males in my tank. My plattys consist of 1 cream coloured male, 2 orange females, the red one and 4 baby platty and the male is quite nasty in the way that he chases the red one round. He's as good as gold with the others, just not her. The other male that picks on her is my white siamese fighter. They are in a tank 1200x600x600 with several other male and female fish but none of them attack her like these 2. Any ideas why they may be doing this? Am setting up a smaller tank to put her and a few others in but am waiting for it to cycle.

    My fish hopefully

Probably a commoner but I'd still like to know what it is
  9. Thankyou all for your input and help but what does 'MTS' mean? Being new to all this sort of thing, I'm not up on all the jargon. Thanks to Wilson for the photos of the sailfins but my fish doesn't quite look like that. Tried to download a photo of it but didn't succeed. It's body is similar to the photos but its body from behind the anal fin is longer and thinner and the dorsal fin stands much higher. It's a browny gold sort of colour with little black stripes through its' body.
  10. Forgot to mention, have also got 2blue emperor tetras in my tank. Does anyone have any photos of female sailfin mollys so that I can compare them with the fish I have? Been looking round the shops and on trademe but can't find another fish like it to keep (her?) company

    First time here

Hi everyone. First time here although I have been stickybeaking at some of the DIY projects that have been posted and am very impressed with what I saw. I've had gold fish, but decided months ago to get into tropical fish and after much deliberation decided to get a larger tank than the one I had. My 1st tank held 200ltrs, this one was a kitset and measures 1200 x600 x600. Bit of a mission putting it together, but got there in the end. Not sure what the ltrs in it are but have got a variety of fish now. 8Neon tetras, 2platys, 1 siamese fighter male, 2albino catfish, 6beacon fish, 5angelfish, 2clown loaches, 2gourami and what I think is a sailfin molly (the person that gave it to me wasn't sure). I've been told this isn't a very good mix by a couple of friends, but they all seem to be getting on fine.
