Anything special to look for when buying liverock?
-
Oh excellent, didn't realise that, definatly an option! How do I know the process is starting? Does it just go by the cycling process? (i.e Ammonia, then Nitrites, then Nitrates?)
-
Hi Wasp I had a read of the beginners guide last night after I had made that post and have a better idea of the setup now. Plan now is to pop into Redwood Aquatics and have a yarn to them about it
-
Righto, so tank is sorted (350 one yay!) Now for the next step. I've decided to have a go with this tank without a sump, as it is alot bigger than I thought it would be and all the gear is fairly unintrusive. Obviously things can change but at this stage I think its easier for me while learning to go with the easier option. So, tank is clean, what do I need now? If possible i'd like to get it setup this weekend so I can have it settle & cycle over the next 2 - 4 weeks. Do I need to go and purchase sand, live rock and salt? Cheers

Not having much luck getting any info out of the person selling the Trigon 350. Is it worth me having a look at the 190 Litre option? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Fishbowls-tanks/auction-114586583.htm Or am I best to go look in the pet stores for a new unit? I'm cashed up as of tomorrow and dead keen on getting started. Jolliolli sent through some pics (thank you very much! and now i'm itching to get started! haha
-
Hi Jolliolli Any chance you could email me some pics of where the holes are etc? [email protected]. Anyone else feel free to send their setup from the tank to the sump pics aswel I'm quite keen to see how its all been done. Cheers

Sweet, my brain is actually absorbing stuff again!
-
So when you say overflow (sorry still getting used to the terms) its basically an acrylic box on the inside of the tank which when fills creates a syphon which sends the water through a pipe (which goes over the side of the tank, not thru a drilled hole) and down to the sump where it does its thing and is sent back up the opposite side of the tank via the return pump and back into the aquarium? If my assumption of "overflow" is correct, that would mean I could get the tank, sort it out and organise the sump at a later date?

Also, how scary is it drilling this glass? (Assuming i'm gunna have to go buy a special glass drillbit) I've drilled everything but glass before, and on something so expensive it would be nerves central!
-
How would I know if its tempered glass? http://www.juwel-aquarium.de/en/trigon.htm?cat=23 Thats the specs on it (check the PDF's at the bottom) If anyone with a bit of knowledge can have a quick squiz and give their expert opinion i'd much appreciate it. I'm going to email Redwood Aquatics and ask about the glass, hopefully they will know! Cheers for all your help people, this is making things ALOT easier for me!

Just noticed a couple of corner tanks appear on trademe in the CHCH reigon. Are these any good for Marine? Or are they a pain due to their shape? Anyone know anything about the models on there that they can make a suggestion about them? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=114573578 CHeers

Well I was actually just coming on here to ask about drilling haha. If its a glass tank, drilling should be fine? And is it something I can do or should I really get a glass person in? Secondly, I have been considering that 5ft tank on Trademe. I reckon I can find the room BUT, finding 4 people to lift the tank itself will be a pain in the ass. Do you think it would really take 4 people to lift it?
-
Not worried about the cost, just worried about getting something thats going to fit in where I'm living at the mo. I'm so very tempted to buy that 5ft Rimu unit on trademe, but unfortuantly theres not enough room for it here
-
Unfortunatly a bit too big for my current residence. 3 Ft long is probably the max I could go. I'm keeping an eye on trademe for any good deals
-
Yep ur right Rockerpeller, i dont want all those bits and pieces showing in the tank. Cheers

Hi All So went out and looked at a few tanks today. Pretty certain I can pick up something decent sized for about $1000. Only problem is, there were NONE that had prebuilt sumps in them (Even Critter Kingdom on Stanmore road were trying to sell that Red Sea unit I was considering without all the stuff with it) Can you actually find tanks with sumps all ready to go? A couple of the decent sized tanks had holes in the stand but not in the glass. Is it as simple as drilling a hole in the bottom of the tank? (I would've assumed drilling the bottom was wrong?) This has lead me to my first decent research point, all about the sump. Can anyone direct me to a good site or can explain exactly how to setup a sump? Also, what was a little offputting was seeing alot of marine tanks in the stores which had that brown algae over anything that wasn't live, it was even on the glass. This just simple stuff like the tropical green algae? Girlfriend nearly had me going the way of Turtles... I thought it was a good idea and was nearly convinced, but after a couple of hours my mindset was straight back to Marine! lol

Cheers, will go have a look in a few of the pet stores this weekend and see what they've got. Thinking about it, i'd much prefer something bigger (like the Hagen ones above). No doubt i'll have more questions after I've had a look
-
Not a bad idea that actually. It was just due to lack of experience that I was going to go with the all in 1 kit. Whats a 200L tank with Sump worth these days? I'm paid monthly too which sux a bit, hense why the $2k in 1 hit wasn't so much a big deal for me (would just take 2 months to save) I'll do some research on here tonight about all of the bits and pieces I need to get. Only problem is, with so many brands and types available of skimmers etc, it'll be hard to know which is going to be the right one for me. I guess buying the tank first is the best option? That way I can get equipment to suit. Cheers
-
Thanks Wasp, good to know. I was actually offered one of them yesterday for $1750, almost too good to give up at that price, but unfortunatly i'm a couple of months away from having the coin Might look at something a bit bigger aswel. Anyone know where I should be looking in CHC? (A place with tanks and sumps)

Hiyas, I'm looking at upgrading to a Marine setup. Have had tropical fish for years and am keen to give Marine a go. I understand its very expensive and time consuming. I accept these terms and conditions and wish to continue haha My question is, do I go out and buy an all in 1 marine setup? (I think i've seen the Red Sea setups for about $2k) or do I attempt to have a go with my Jewel Rekord 80? As i've read, the smaller the tank, the harder it is. I'm quite happy to sell up my Rekord 80 to help fund the proper setup, but just want to make sure that its a sensible idea. Keen to start with just a couple of clown fish and a couple of corals, hence why I am asking if my Rekord 80 will be any good to start with, then upgrade later? Can anyone suggest a certain setup that contains everything except live rock/coral/livestock? I think organism in CHCH have the Red Sea setups, but until i'm fully funded I dont really want to start looking (otherwise it will become an impulse buy haha) Cheers Matt

Oh I agree with you, if it works, do it. I had a Male Betta in with my Guppies and he was fine with them, but I had alot of people tell me I was stupid for doing so. Might give them a try, i'm hoping because they've lived with little fish all their life that they may not attempt anything. They're not quite big enough to eat the adult guppies yet.
-
Hi All, Has anyone here had any luck with Fancy Guppies and Angelfish in the same tank? Do they get on alright together? I've got 2 Angelfish which have been bought up with Neon Tetras their whole life, and I'm quite keen to move them to my Guppy tank as I'm going to attempt a Marine setup and 3 fish tanks will be too many to look after. I'm quite aware they will probably eat anything that will fit inside their mouth, but I'm not so concerned about this as they will provide a good form of fry control, but apart from this, is there any other reasons not to put them in the same tank? BTW, they would be moving from a Jewel Rekord 80 to a tall 80L tank. CHeers
-
Yeah its not planted. Theres hiding places, but they're few and far between. So might work out in the end
-
Heyas I've got myself a guppy tank with both male and female fancy guppies. What i'm looking for is another fish to complement this tank who will also take on the role of snail and fry control. I'd love a Betta but know theres a risk that he/she will attack my male guppies. Is there anything else that will happily get along with the guppies and keep the fry/snail level quite low? Do you think that having the adult guppies will be enough to keep the fry population at a low level? I like to have fry, just not hundreds of them haha. Any other suggestions for fry control please let me know aswel. I have another tank which contains 2 Angels, 14 Neons, RTBS, 2 BNs & 2 Loaches. Cheers
