  1. Woops didn't realise you were in Canada  There will be tonnes of stuff available there, and for a fraction of the price of stuff in NZ. Go crazy  May I ask why did you join an NZ forum instead of a Canadian forum or another American forum?
  2. You should start with fish that are esy to care for. Fancy guppies would be a good start if you want something colourful, or you could try some of the various danio species we have available in New Zealand. Emerald-eye rasboras are good if you want something a little different
  3. The best plants to start with would be Indian Fern, Java and Windelov Fern if you ever do decide to get some plants
  4. Woops didn't really it properly
  5. Saw this link... http://www.goldfishbowl.co.nz/shop_online.html# Has a photo of a tang but the description says Paracaridina spec. 'Mustang Shrimp'. And it has a "buy now" button... Are these seriously in New Zealand? :bounce:
  6. Why on earth did she take the lizard out of its box and take photos of it? They have no right to open other people's packages - their job is to deliver them  :an!gry
  7. Also I would remove the ornaments and replace them with real bogwood and grow some Widelov and Java fern over it so it looks more natural
  8. Donna you are doing such a brilliant job of caring for this wee fella. Well done

Don't be upset about it. You should be proud to be a tidy kiwi  Keeping the environment free of litter is a good thing, not something to be despised

Nice one LA  You learn teamwork in many other subjects as you have to work with people, like I have already stated in an earlier post. I work with lots of people in English, Social Studies and Science. Like I have said, you are much more likely to get injured in sport than walking and stuff like that. Also I don't know what you mean about poor quality teaching. My PE teacher is brilliant, he is a wonderful guy and is great to talk to. I have had no problems with him. I just don't like PE and get nothing out of it. Also like I have said, sport should be optional so those competive guys can get fit while having their "fun" arguing with each other, and those who don't do sport should be made to do a non competitive form of exercise. I do agree with you that exercise is important. And you will be suprised how many kids don't like sport. There are quite a few at my school. Sport is valueless to people, like me, who don't like regularly getting injured, and who aren't competitive. Those people just stand and do nothing in PE. I would happily go for a walk, and I wouldn't get injured by flying balls and tough people accidentally running into me. I would still be getting exercise, and getting fit.

Maths is important though, and is required to gain many qualifications. So is Science, English and Social Studies. PE is not. And like I have said, PE is sports and games. This only caters to those people who are competitive, and like to argue about who scored what goal, or argue about who is "out" or "in" etc. I think doing some sort of exercise, like walking which I have already stated, would be much more appropriate for schools as it caters for everyone. Also in PE there is a high chance of people getting injured. People in my PE class get injured regularly. I think PE should be optional, and those who don't want to do it should still be made to do some sort of physical activity, but something that doesn't involve being competitive, or some aim to it. With stuff like walking or biking, there is no competition to it, or no aim. You just do it, and you get fit while doing it. As you have stated, it is important to be fit. I just think sports is a load of rubbish, and like Josh stated, is for meatheads.
  14. I have from now until the end of the thrid term to complete it. I was also considering doing something else as well. I will have a think over the holidays and talk to my science techer when I go back to school.

I understand fitness is important. My point is that I think PE is a waste of time - sport and all that competitive rubbish. I can get fit by walking every day if I want to. And I think that's what should be done at schools IMO. And those who want to do sport can either do it as a hobby out of school, or choose it as an optional subject. I see your point about healthcare crippling the economy, and I am not saying that there should not be any physical activity at all in schools. I just think sport and games are a waste of time. I would quite happily walk around the field a few times instead of playing a game of soccer, where I would just stand there and do nothing, afraid of being injured by some buff kid walking into me or getting hit with the ball. Sport is a safety hazard, and you are much more likely to get injured playing sport than you are going for a walk. Also I think PE uniforms are stupid, and I hate getting changed in the changing rooms. I would much rather just wear the clothes that I already have on. People judge me and are very immature in the changing rooms. All of this could be avoided if we had "fitness" instead of PE - which is really actually sports practice, and only caters for the buff guys who like to be rough  With "fitness", everyone could go at their own pace - the buff guys could do push ups etc, and the kids like me who are not into being buff, rough and tough could just go for a nice long walk. And the tough guys could get changed if they want to, but all those against the dreaded changing rooms could just stay in their normal school uniform. Do you see my point?
  16. Mmm could be a good science fair project, might have to think about that
  17. My assumption is that they will die overnight, not instantly. That's just nonsense - of course they wouldn't die instantly  I read a thread on here somewhere and somebody said that after 6 hours you will start to lose bacteria. But, like it has already been stated on here, the filter should run 24/7 for maximum efficiency. And the best problem to solve a noisy filter - don't buy one in the first place. Eheims all the way!

    One with wheels I suspect?
  19. No I mean the bacteria inside the filter. The flow doesn't tend to bother the bacteria inside the tank because it is weak compared to the flow in the filter. For example, you can have a flow rate of 1200lph. All of that flow is distributed throughout the tank, and is concentrated inside the filter canister. The bacteria in the filter are used to much higher flow than inside the tank. So when you turn the filter off, the filter bacteria all die, but the bacteria in the tank are OK because they are used to weaker flow. So this is what I mean... Filter gets turned off. Bacteria inside it die off. There is still bacteria in the tank. But can they recolonise the filter again during the day in just a few hours? And if there is bacteria in the tank, doesn't that defeat the point of the filter if the bacteria inside the filter are always dieing off? Why have the filter at all if you are just going to kill the bacteria it contains which is the sole point in a filter in the first place?
  20. But the bacteria can't recolonise a filter in a day if they all die off over night and the filter is turned on the next day (I think?). And so if the filter bacteria keep dieing off, doesn't that defeat the point in having a filter?

    The What's Up? thread.

Yuck I have cross country tomorrow :an!gry   Me and a friend are walking it - so at least I'm walking with someone which means I hopefully won't get picked on... What I really don't understand is when we are doing PE at school and I don't run, or hit the ball properly etc people get really mad at me, but what I do doesn't actually effect them in any way. Its almost like the fact that I am not putting any effort into PE "disrespects" it, and because they are obsessed with PE then it somehow offends them, making them want to swear at me, insult me and threaten me :-? And a lot of people don't like me just because I hate PE. And I don't even understand why PE is compulsory at college. The way I see it is that for most people it is a hobby, for some it can be a job, but it is not an essential or important aspect that we need to have to get qualifications for jobs. For example it is like making Music compulsory - it won't help you in life unless that is what you are interested in. IMO the important subjects are Maths, English, Science, Health and Social Studies. None of the others are essential for your learning unless you are interested in that subject, or want to do it for a job. In PE we don't even get taught about how physical activity is important for our bodies etc, we just learn how to play games and sport, which is not essential for quailifications. And if I wanted to get fit I would just go walking every day  Also we have to work in groups for a lot of other things in different subjects, so PE isn't really important for "team building" - we do it in lots of other things. For some weird reason, it is most boys favourite subject. They seem to like it because they don't have to use their brains at all, and they just run around and chuck balls at stuff. I personally think that is sad. I would much rather be learing about the atmosphere in Science, or WW2 in Social Studies. I think that stuff is really fascinating, and I like being able to learn new and interesting things. PE is just a wasted two hours of each week that could be used for learning stuff that is actually going to help me in life.
  22. Totally agree with you about on the brands Eheims are brilliant. I'm 14 too and I seriously don't mind paying more money for quality products. It is well worth it. I have two Eheim 2213's on my tanks and they are brilliant filters. I have never had any problems from them, and they are very easy to clean and maintain. My Aqua One CF-1000 was quite, but it started leaking and so it is sitting in its box in the closet now. Also they don't come with very good filter media. And I hate to think what the SunSuns come with - I had a box of SunSun "Bio-Rings" and I put them in a bucket and they made the water chalky white. I repeatedly tried to clean them but they still kept making the water cloudy, and also they broke extremely easily. The Eheim media is much better quality and just needs a super quick rinse and is ready to use.
  23. Organism has nice guppies
