  1. thanks Afrikan... This is much more exciting than watching the rugby.
  2. No idea when or who or how.... But I was just putting 2 new siamese algae eaters in my tank when I saw 2 6mm long baby glowlight tetras in the tank. What do I do now? They have a little colour so I assume they are at least 2 weeks old and had survived my rigourous water changes. Are they ok with my algae eaters and catfish or even the other tetras as all the other fish seem really interested in them. What do I feed them? Should I stick them in a breeding tank or leave them in the community tank? How on earth did I manage to not notice the little blighters till now... Advice please...... I think I may have posted this in the wrong place... can someone move it to breeding... I was excited and not thinking straight.... Gawd I am such a newbie.
  3. thanks... we only lost one glowlight in the process and I dont think it was water quality related as the rest are all doing great.
  4. Just wondering if there is an interest in starting a South Auckland FNZAS group. Central Auckland I think is the closest but just thinking if there is enough inital interest I might try starting up a chapter in Pukekohe. (I hope its ok to post this in this forum, if not can someone please move it for me. Cheers) thanks all.
  5. lol... sorry my typo... yes bristlenose.... (thank goodness its friday) the mind was willing, but the fingers were not.
  6. cool, so now I know why my new catfish adores the filter...
  7. Hey all. Just got a new bottlenose (our first catfish) and wondering what temp they normally live in. What info I have found on the net seems to be conflicting. I have the tank at 26 degrees at present and he seems ok but just wondering... Thanks.
  8. Well either way both the plants are now relocated to dry land. I was gifted some lovely plant cuttings from another member here and they are currently starting to put roots down and making the tank look almost natural... lol. Thanks to my generous donator you know who you are. And because the new cuttings were from an established tank I even have some algae and bacteria now growing to help cycle my wee set up. So the brown algae now looks like thin strands of cotton... Kinda river looking actually. Very cool to watch the new tetras swim through. Thanks all for your input etc. I didn't bother taking the plants back to the LFS as other things got in the road and now it just doesn't seem worth it. But thanks for all your help.
  9. thanks for that. I figured out the PM thing thismorning. Are my pics too big? I thought under 128kb was ok?
  10. no i suppose the green and white plant wont die. Thanks for the suggestions on the plant front.
  11. Alan... are you referring to the green and white leafed plant behind and to the left of the teracotta pot? If so then err  thats on the background paper behind the tank. If your referring to the plant in the terracotta pot, that is solid green and was told it was a mondo. What plants should I be looking for to begin a plant/fish tank?
  12. I suspect the LFS owner is innocent or ignorant of these plants not being true aquatics. She didn't know a lot about them, just read me the blurb she got from her supplier. But in any case she does need to know so she can decide for herself if she still wants to sell them. The annoying thing for me is having no plants in the tank again. sigh... oh well at least I like shopping and thank goodness for Trademe.
  13. ok right... officially annoyed now. I didn't pay a lot for them but I know she has quite a few still for sale (submerged in a tank) at the store so I will be taking both plants back today with a request for a refund. Thanks for the info.
  14. Really?! Wow. Thats pretty dodgy if she is selling aquaria plants that are not actually for aquariums. Won't be going back there if thats the case. She also sold me a mini mondo which I was also told yesterday was not an aquatic, Is this true? (these two plants she recommended as good, hardy and easy to look after) This is the mini mondo she sold me
  15. I have just stuffed up the post I tried to do with a pic of my tank...so I expect it to be declined... I will try again later.. dont think I am allowed to post twice the same post to fix pic issue. But I did manage to post a pic of the green stardust in the plants forum if anyone wanted to have a look. Slowly getting myself orientated.
  16. Why is my Green stardust plant have brown algae on it? Any ideas? Its a new plant from LFS and a new tank only 8 days old and a new bulb in the overhead lighting, (the sort that are good for plant and fish growth) its not in direct sunlight and the temp of tank is 27deg and ph is around 7.4 and its situated directed behind a piece of bogwood and still in its plastic cage thing it came in. I have been told it may be new tank syndrome... if so what do I do to fix it? Cheers all for any and all responses.
  17. definately interested. Err.. I am not sure how to get my details to you as yet... Still figureing out the site. Cheers.
  18. Hi from another newbie.. We looked at getting tiger barbs but the woman at our lfs said they wern't a community tank fish. So I am confused as ever. lol
  19. Thankyou all for your lovely welcome. As soon as I can figure out how to upload/sign in to my albums I will post a pic of my fishtank and set up. Found out the plants are a Green stardust and a mini mondo... I have left both in their little mesh pot things in the tank for the time being as I have had such differing opinions as whether or not to put sand, dirt etc under the gravel. Also can anyone tell me where you get the dark stones for the bottom of your tank. Our local pet store doesn't stock it.
  20. Ianab.. thankyou for that. Good advice
  21. I have driftwood in tank already... hmmmm..
  22. So I have a 600mm x 300mm x 300mm tank with a 200lt per hour internal filter (which I just discovered is too small for my tank) A good heater at 27 deg A single light above (apparantly the right sort to grow plants and fish) 2 as yet unidentified plants, one with a brown algae on some of the leaves. 4 baby glowlight tetras. Day 7 today since fish introduced. And a whole lot of newbie going on. lol. I am on the hunt for a couple more plants and a new internal filter, So thats me. Any idea suggestions etc welcomed.
  23. So humour the newbie here... what is a healthy ph range for a community tank? My tap water seems to lurk around ph7.4
  24. Have you done a partial water change yet? Are you supposed to with fishless cycling?
