  1. and mr catfish wont eat the eggs?
  2. baby fry food.. its a powdered food with bbs in it.
  3. Do you have any phos pad in your filter.. I believe if you put new plants in and have a phos pad in there to remove the excess phosphate (the cause of hair algae I am told) You should be fine. Let me know if this works. It did for me.
  4. The 9 yr old accidently dropped a couple of tablespoons of novatom into the breeding tank thismorning. I have done a 10% water change but cant vacumm cause I have a bunch of glowlight eggs/fry in there. (tank is divided into 2 with 5 week old fry one side and eggs/babies on the other side.) Only a single sponge filter to filter the water and the tank is approx 40lt... What else can I do to clear the water? thanks all.
  5. I have twisted val at the back of my tank. and ambulia which I also have to trim constantly but the fry do love it. and sag grass and java fern in the front of the tank.. All growing easily and I am also a beginner. goodluck
  6. I tried using the magnet again and it does work... just slowly. I think I should have used it earlier than now. but I brought a couple of plastic scrapers from mitre 10 mega yesterday as the edge looks a lot like a credit card and tried using it last night. It really does work quite well. So the mans credit card is safe for now.
  7. yeah I think that would be fine, thats about the size of the one I have but I brought a divider from the LFS and split it into 2 sections so straight after spawning I could put the breeding pair into the other half without having to bag and reclimatise them into the main tank. The key I am told is to use a single sponge filter rather than a standard internal filter as the wee fry get sucked into a normal filter.
  8. I have them in half a 40lt tank (the other half is growing out some other fry) and will be feeding them NovaTom as I have had good success using that in the past. As far as getting them to breed. I just waited till the females looked fat as and put them in the breeding tank in the afternoon and added the male later that night and turned the heater up to 26.5degrees. They spawned the following afternoon evening. I didn't feed them in the breeding ank though. Same technique for buenos aires tetras got them spawning too.
  9. its a 5ft tank and light hood with $300 filter and over $500 worth or accesories. Dont think I could buy that locally very cheaply at all.
  10. this lot I did last night was 2 females and 1 male and he spawned with both... go figure?
  11. yep this is my 2nd go.. First spawn I managed to find and keep alive only 2 fry.. lol
  12. I would say glowlight tetras as I am on my second spawning and I am a complete newbie and albino tetras have been pretty easy too. and neither are light sensitive and ate novatom from day 3 or so.
  13. After googling for pics of glowlight tetras eggs or spawning I gave up and tonight when the little blighters started spawning I took a couple of pics. Enjoy... the first one is of the breeding pair after a spawn run through the ambulia. the second one is of the pvc pipe covered in eggs. Unfortunately the parents ate most of the eggs off the pvc tube before i got them relocated. Hopefully there will still be some survivors.
  14. I only use carbon when I need to remove meds. Otherwise I dont bother.
  15. actually we already own a obscenely large van... But mum is up visiting now and we have like a million children so a 12 hr trip there and another 12hr trip back is not this mums idea of a good time... I guess I was just looking for an easy answer. Guess we will be going on a road trip.
  16. lol.... the only paint scrapers I have are currently covered in paint. lol
  17. really?! I have one of those and it doesn't seem to move the spots at all... although the SAE to love the bit of debri it manages to get swirling about. Me thinks perhaps this will be a time consuming task... hmm..
  18. lol...thanks... wanders off searching for hubbys credit cardweg
  19. for about 20mins around 5pm if there is sun about it hits the tank..other than that no direct sunlight. Err... just scrape it off with the edge of the credit card I assume?
  20. So my mum who lives in Wellington has a 5ft tank with all the accesories sitting in her garage. I want that tank. She wants to give me the tank. How the heck do I get the tank to Pukekohe in one piece; short of driving down and bringing it back in the van. Wer'e thinking we will have to make a wooden box for it to go in and use a trucking company? Any and all ideas welcome.
  21. yep another neat freak with a tank. and yet in the beginning it seemed like such a tidy hobby. lol. So the front of my 2ft is covered in spots of green algae. My pleco and catfish dont seem so interested and my SAE could care less... what is it and how do I clean it off without annoying the precious wee fishies? Cheers, all.
