  1. fish are listed in my signature
  2. Does anyone know a great deal about these fish ... i saw one at jansens botney 2day .... if only i had the $45 odd that they were asking does anyone have any ... would you recommend one in my big comm tank??? cheers Lewis
  3. you tank sounds like a decent setup ... any chance of some pictures?
  4. cheers david ... also would it be better for the vertical walls of the box to be slightly slopped as this would alow for the water to runn down rather then waterfall over the top
  5. im down in south auck so having a look online for some as i type ... i was more concerned about the size of the box because ive heard of people saying that the overflow size ie the length of the toothed section (for mass flow rate) will change how it overflows .... as soon as i figure out what piping i need i can work out the depth the main question would be ... IS BIGGER BETTER for the size of the box?
  6. im goin to be making the overflow box inside the tank as pictured before for the durso piping (thanks for the advice) as in the picture that follows ... what would be resonable dimensions for A and B ... also would it be best to put the overflow teeth on A or B or A + B ... also tooth sizing just remember the focus of this was to make it so it can be used for marine when the bank ballance allows for it :-? im guessing the depth will depend on the size of the 90 degree bend ... unless theres an optimum distance from the bottom of the pipe to the bottom of the overflow box ill be making it out of 1/4" clear acrillic ... ive been looking around for some but havnt been able to find any .... any ideas where??? the plan is 2 silicon it into the corner (after draining the water level down) so when it gets dirty itll be the old tooth brush that comes out Thanks all for ur advice ... sorry for asking 2 many question but i think its best to get it all planed out before jumping in and having to redo it cos of a stupid mistake Cheers again Lewis
  7. so here comes the next question ... What is the size of the box for the over flow??? ill be putting the sawtooth on the top to stop fish/plants excaping
  8. how exactly does this 'tuning' work???
  9. the actual cut hole size in the back of the tank is approx 40mm diam so as long as i use the biggist piping possible i should be fine right???
  10. sooooo would this stop the gurgle??? nice reef by the way david ... want one bad but gotta finish uni 1st then get some $$$ so i can create my masterpiece
  11. thanks for ur input suphew uve just given me a great idea tho instead of having a over flow in my tank as pictured in the link that u gave me ... would this work ... Making a glass/plastic or otherwise box around the hole in the top right of my tank up to the water level that i want (with the saw-tooth top so no fishys/plants take a dive) so it simply flows into that then out the back of the tank through the already cut large hole!!! sounds simple to me ... tell me if im wrong though i also should of mentioned that i want 2 set my tank up as close as possible to a marine tank so if/when i decide to jump in the deap end and change over to marine it will be as easy and less costly ... so hoping to set this sump up as a marine/fresh-tropical hybrid ... so room for a skimmer etc cheers Lewis .... how do you like my 2min sketches
  12. Hey all im looking at setting up a sump on my 4ft tropical tank to replace the 2 canisters that can be seen in the picture below So far what ive been thinking is to get a plastic 2-3ft rectangular buckety tank from sumwhere like paylessplastics etc and get some dividers to cut into shape as im guessing this would be the cheapist so now i need to know if there is any particular size ratio the sump sections need to be. below is what im thinking of making now heres the unanswered questions What return pump do i need??? (cheapest/best option) What type of piping is best (size, pvc, flexy?) what is the best media as im thinking i want to use quite a bit of the fine wool stuff Room/placement of heaters as i want 2 150w ish in the sump instead of the 1 300w seen in the tank also my tank has a large hole cut in the back right corner but i think its going to be below where i want the waterline to be (as seen in the picture by the large white round plug) ... so what are my overflow options??? if this goes through i will document and post all that i do so others can follow at a later date anyother info that may help me for this project is also welcome cheers all of your help Lewis
  13. build up a frame like mine would be the best lookn way http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/hi-all-just-introducing-my-4ft-tank-vt21821.html the double 2 ft lights are just screwed up in side it, the who thing sits on the sides of the tank just outside the glass lid ... if u want any better pics of it tell me and ill put them up
  14. on my 4ft tank i went to mitre 10 and go 2x twin tube 2ft lights for about $30 each ... i brought/was given 2ft aquarium lights (2x the pink plant ones, 1x brilliant daylight and 1x blue sky royal) plants are growing wayyyy 2 fast and most of papakura can probably see my house glowing at night if there on one thing i did have to do tho was wire up the 2 light units in parallel as they did not come with a plug ... but hey it was the cheapist way 2 do it with mine at the time if u do decide to do sumthin like this, plan it carfully i.e orientation above the tank etc and make sure u have sumthin reflecting the light back down ... just gives it all that little bit more of a wow factor
  15. wow mine are spitting out 50+ babies im guessing each time ... whats the main disadvantage of them cross breeding? would it just weeken the strains? and not be as good looking? but if my brichardi are already paired off, wouldnt that stop them from cross breeding???
  16. what type of price and where could i get some Neolamprologus Pulcher from? would they go well with my breeding brichardi of would they fight?
  17. yea shipping is a bit of an ass not a bad price ... i paid round $37EACH for a trio of breeding adults and since ive had them they killed of one of the males but still spitting out the babies
  18. ull like the little guys .... ive seen a very similar fish to the brichardi but there fins are yellow, woulda paid through the nose for them what price/size have u got urs lined up for? if they ever start breeding id advise you to tank out ANY other fish in the tank .... theyll heard the others into a corner and if they come out theyll be toast (experience talking ) gd luck
  19. hi all just a quick question to get the best choice of heater ive currently got a 300w cheapo heater (non submersible) and wanting to upgrade Tank pic http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/hi-all-just-introducing-my-4ft-tank-vt21821.html would the best choice be .... 1x brand spanking 300w expensive model ? 2x 150w ? 3x 100w ? what would be the best do you think what kinda of brand / price should i be looking out for?
  20. Your wanting brichardi ??? ... check out http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/brichardi-and-babies-vt22995.html PM me if interested cheers
  21. Hey all just gonna do a bit of photo sharing of my Brichardi breeding tank Any comments welcome (especiallt a way 2 get rid the algy) Sorry for some of the bluryness but the camera is on the blitz Complete Tank Happy/Agressive Parents Nope those arnt bubbles --- there babies Least blury of the babies So far the biggest babies are closing in on 2cm (selling time ... so PM me id interested) and the smallest ones are bout a week or so now which are pritty small i cant say ive seen the eggs because of the coral ball bottom and coral rock cover, i just see a few smaller ones poke there head out one day and the next day i have a swarm of them i feed them on mini flake food and the VERY odd bit of frozen brineshrimp if anyone has ideas on anything better i can do will my setup all constructive comments are welcome Cheers All Lewis
  22. i had power out from 6pm - 1am (stupid lights and bubbles blasted on and woke me up) both tanks seemed fine and no losses ... im not sure if its true but if u have a lot of losses you MITE be covered under home and contents insurance ... could be worth checking out on your pollicy if you want replacements cherri O Lewis
  23. so where do they come from??? are they all wild caught? ive heard of people randomly finding babies in there tanks and growing them up ... as ive got a heavily populated community tank i dnt think thats gonna be happening in mine
  24. so my theory of the airbladder being bigger and 'row' coloured is correct for the females??? i was thinking about putting one of these in a smaller tank alone to find out if i could get any eggs out of them ... would this be a good idea??? how long does it take for the eggs 2 hatch/ mature etc??? cheers all for viewing Lewis
  25. Is there any way to tell the difference? i currently have 12 or 13 and would like to know there are some where the gutsack is larger and has more of a tanny yellow colour to it where the others remain silvery ... could this be the eggs??? cheers Lewis
