  1. thanks HaNs that means a 200w heater should be ok I thought the 100w was a little too small for the job
  2. Hi everyone my tank heater is acting up it varies by abt 10 deg f. . So it's time to get a new one, I've got a 100w in tank now 30gal apx 36 x 24x 18 inches shoul I get a bigger heater? Also tank is by an outside wall
  3. filter on left rear heater on right rear, also it's one of those that you clamp on the top of tank. could probly put another heater on otherside. water flow pretty good I've got a airstone under/alongside of heater
  4. first off Iwould like to thank everyone for the advice for the ammonia problem thats back to normal. However; my tank heater is having some problems. the temp. is like a rollercoaster up and down, of course I've got the tank by an outside wall and winter is near do I need a bigger heater? It's a 100 watt heater for a 30 gal tank apx 92cm x 42cm x 30.5cm
  5. still have a problem, am doing 30% water change daily. after a couple hours ammonia up to 2 ppm. I cleaned the gravel, pulled out driftwood cleaned under that, found some decaying food there, also took apart filter, found a chunk of food there also. also added chemical that changes ammonia to ammoniam. anything else i can do. It's a 30 gal tank.

  7. back again with old problem my ammonia levels were creeping up to about 4ppm doing 50% water changes is keeping it about 2ppm. Before this happend I had a power failure for about a day and half, the water temp was down to about 60 deg f could this have killed off some bacteria?
  8. not sure whats going on, there's a light clouding going on in my tank. not heavy I can see the fish ok just when I look through the side of the tank. I see a little greyish white in the water. It appears to be uniform from top to bottem. It doesn't seem to affect the fish any. the levels are good. Fish get fed once a day. Just worried if it's something bad I want to nip it off right away :-? :-?
  9. Alan was very knowlagable in this hobby his tips helped me immensely. The only episode I remember about him. Was when some one complained that his avatar was disturbing, He turned it off, but due to popular demmand turned it back on. He will be missed
  10. welcome, at first this hobby seems very confusing that will change down the road. I'm no expert, thats for sure, but read the articles about cycling. It will save you time and money, otherwise you will probably do like I did and get too many fish too soon, and watching your ammonia count go sky high. Trust me its no fun waking up and wondering how many fish are dead . Just take your time and listen to some of those that have been there. Its very good that you looked into a club, best move you could make. anyhow good luck and once again welcome!
  11. greetings from another yank i'm from ohio, as for your goldies I would try to take them back. maybe get a few tetras, but, first read the articles about cycling. If I would have read that it would have saved me time money and fishes. If you have a fish pool they could survive there I've seen goldfish live for a at least few years up in michigan
  12. Welcome I hope you don't mind a yank saying hi. You got me beat I just pull a haz-mat tanker un1203. why cant you put a small tank in the sleeper with you? Bet you could fit a 10gal in there
  13. Hey thanks everybody those are the fish, however I think I will pass on getting any it just don't seem right
  14. Here is the pic, sorry for the poor quality.
  15. I saw some unusal fish at one those chain pet stores. they're called floresent fish about 1 inch long 1/4 inch high silver with either a yellow, green, or orange stripes on topside very bright. could this be those dyed fish I've heard about. Will try to get pics 2morrow. Any info would be appreciated. I wouldn't mind getting some, but if they're dyed I don' t want anything to do with it
  16. gee does that mean I have to get another bigger tank?! :bounce:
  17. one of my guppies has half of its tail missing, I suspect my angel fish did it am I right are there any other fish that might do this. I have clown loaches, platys, cory cats . Is there anything I can do for the guppy? he seems to be ok he swims well enough to get food.
  18. back again with questions, this time more fun than the other times. Before I forget I want to thank everybody that gave helpful suggestions before. This time I'm looking at getting a 4ft tank and I want to do a better job setting it up. I'm thinking about cichlids for the tank, there will be 2 angles going into tank any suggestions about some friends for them?
  19. Read, read, and read about cycling your tank, it will save you much frustration, and fish and money so you can get a 2nd tank sooner
  20. I just got a bristlenose he's about 8cm long, and 1 pleco. I have driftwood in the tank so they can hide and have a nibble, the bn don't seem to want to hide. At the present time there still is enough alge for a couple of days. after that I got algea wafers for them. Is there anything else I need to do or need to know?
  21. I am truely sorry for your lose, at least you have some suriviors. It seems that the whole world has trash in it that needs to be disposed of. What would be nice would be to introduce them to a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with rock salt, it's a very good rehabilation tool.
  22. how long does a platy take to drop her fish? I have a female thats been preggers for abt 5 weeks, how much longer? assuming I am right that shes preggers and not just fat :-?
  23. It sounds like we all have similar problems with governments. Does anybody know the most scary words in the english language? "I,m from the government and I'm here to help"
  24. I've used it several times, it turns the ammonia into ammonim but; when testing for ammonia it will still show up as ammonia. I also use a product by sera it has the bacteria in it seems to work out very well; as I have 3ppm amonia in my tap water to start with. changing water as said above is the best and cheapest way to do it, and find the cause good luck it takes time and patience of which I have very little
