  1. Hey I've got a Siamese Fighter and did a lot of reading before I bought him. Although siamese fighters can "Survive" in small jars etc it's not really the best life for them. They are peaceful fish and like space to swim and the company of others, just not other males though. The hard part is finding tank mates for them, different people will say different things e.g certain fish are not compatible etc but it really does depend on the fish and the personality of the tank mates. I have mine in a tank with Pearl and dwarf gouramis and was a bit worried my fighter might get picked on. Fortunately I found that the Gouramis don't bother the fighter :bounce: and spend their time chasing each other round the tank instead
  2. RC cars aye? I have a Gas powered 10:1 at my folks place in Hamilton somewhere, will have to dig it out and see if it still works! Unfortunately being the Mech eng guy I am, the best bit for me was building it! didn't really get into the driving of it though.
  3. Damn, but how do you get to your LFS without a car!! hehe. Coming up from Christchurch I can't see how people get around Auckland without cars. But my car is my baby! I can't part with her. I think my GF gets a bit jealous at times. Just another question, are their many guys here that are into diving as well? do the 2 hobbies kinda go hand in hand? I recommend it if you ever get the chance, it's really a whole new world down there.
  4. Ouch!!! That's a bit of a dilemma for me being a car lover. I have a tendency to form a love for expensive toys, e.g bike (with or without motor) and now I'm saving up for SCUBA gear! Partner wants to go on Holiday later in the year so my next tank might be a while away!
  5. Haha, nice. Being the Newbie I am, as soon as I started work I went out and bought my first big (in my scheme of things) tank (200L). Previously I have kept gold fish in my 30L tank which I've had for years. This is my first heated tank though. Maybe more tanks will follow as my career progresses My flatmates got a big shock when I got my tank, as it's a dominating presence in our lounge. So far my tank has been going great :bounce:
  6. Probably a stupid question but what does MTS mean? I managed to figure out LFS (local fish shop) :bounce:
  7. How big are the Pearl Gourami's when you feed them chunky solid food? Mine are about 3inches and go crazy for flakes. I think they love flakes more than frozen blood worm.
  8. Welcome, A good place to go would be Tough Tanks on Henderson Valley Rd. They don't sell fish or plants but they have lots of tanks, food, toys, etc. Good luck.
  9. He's 3 inches long and the bigger of 2 plecos in the tank. The substrate is a mixture of dark and light gravel, mostly on the light side though. Other tank mates include Dwarf and Pearl Gouramis, a male betta, 2 clown loaches and tetras.
  10. I purchased a couple of Red spotted Plecos from my LFS a couple of weeks ago and I have noticed that one of them has a faded patch on him where the coloration is "faded". I just thought that that was how my pleco is but...... this morning I noticed that this faded patch on him was gone and was at full colour, then about 20 min later it was slightly faded but not as much as he usually is. Does anyone else notice something similar on their Plec's? Or do you know why it might occur?
  11. Cool thanks. Will have to write that down, cause I'm sure I will prob say moon eyes again  Not sure where I got Tetras from either???
  12. Hey, I took a photo this morning, but because of flash/lighting you can't see the blue crescent under their eyes. If you could help me name this fish it would be much appreciated because I seem to have moon eyes stuck in my head and can't remember what they are really named! I'm pretty certian that they are a Tetra though. Cheers.
  13. Hmm they look very similar except the blue crescent was under the eye, not above. Am pretty sure it is a Tetra, but will take a picture and find out.
  14. I may have the name wrong  they are silver with a black dorsal fin and light from above reflects with a blue crescent shape under their eyes. Hopefully you know what fish I'm talking about.
  15. Hey all, I have recently joined this forum and I can see it's an awesome place to get info for a newbie like me. I have kept a few gold fish for a number of years and just recently I have changed to a tropical tank because I really really wanted a Betta. I have a 200L tank which was bought in Jan and now is home to: 20 tettras (10 neons 10 mooneyes) 2 dwarf Gourami 2 Pearl Gourami 1 male betta 2 clown loaches and 2 red spot Plecos. So far all fish are doing very well Photos will be up soon
