  1. Look around for an Aquamedic t-1000 or something similar. I recently sold one for $200 secondhand and I know people with six footers who use just a single t-1000... It pays to know what you are looking for though, you pay for what you get. The t-1000 sticks out in my opinion as one that is fairly common and wont cost you nearly as much as a secondhand deltec etc...
  2. hmm na I didnt see any chicks unfortunately. And no you cant keep Stoats!!! That one was caught in a live capture trap (the metal box it is in). It was actually flown down to Christchurch so Lincoln Uni could do some studies to improve stoat trapping techniques. Quite cool actually.
  3. Sorry, I have been having a few troubles with getting the photos up, which is why the ones of the petrel and the tute are so small. In case people are interested- and Im going away at 7 am tomorrow photos are of- from top- -Pied Stilt -Stoat (and dog!) -Baby dotterel -OB YG (Adult male dotterel- father of chick) -Juvenile saddleback -Some small petrel (sorry I am not up with my seabird i.ds) -holding a tuatara -Deuvecals gecko (again being held by me) -Mum and chick Saddleback. -Male bell bird taking flight
  4. The next set of photos are from Whatupuke island where I spent 2 weeks working on the rat monitoring/eradication project. Whatupuke island is one of the chickens of Hen and Chickens fame. Story goes that a single rat was caught so I was over there establishing tracks all over the island (so no spot is more than 150m from a trap and monitoring tunnel) to asses whether is was a single intruder or one of many on the island. While I didn't see any signs of rats there was plenty of wildlife to keep me amused. (sorry about the dirty fingernails!)
  5. Yes I have been a bit quiet on here lately. Primarily as I have spent the last 2 month on leave from the museum working as a volunteer on different conservation projects. Here is a small selection of photos. First ones are from Whakanewha Regional Park on Waiheke Island where I spent three weeks doing pest monitoring and checking on the baby dotterels development.
  6. I went to a 6 week course run by toastmasters, I found it was great, as you get more experience talking to an audience. Further you are offered creative criticism. My ad-lib speech ability in particular greatly improved, and now I can comfortably do 10 minute speeches and the like without cue cards which is really useful.
  7. it is good for them as it is low in fat
  8. -Led Zeppelin -Eminem -Frank Sinatra -Lupe Fiasco -Robbie Williams -Red Hot Chili Peppers -Kanye West -U2 -Queen -Hollie Smith
  9. bicolour blenny would be my pic
  10. Umm, to do with supermarkets, not so much a horror story as an embarrassing one- I used to work for Arnotts Biscuits setting up those big red boxes and stacking them once a week when there are sales on at all the central Auckland Supermarkets. I was walking along an Isle in the St Lukes Foodtown and was looking at the food, rather than where I was going. The problem was that this isle had a pillar in the middle of the isle against which a few hundred packets of condoms were placed. Yep, I walked right into it and knocked them all over.
  11. Also depentds on what you are into. Only hollywoods does Marines for example, while if you are into discus, Pupuke would be your best bet
  12. central Auckland beaches are pretty bad to be honest. Your best bet is Karekare, Bethells or Muriwai. The lake at karekare is great too, and more than enough sand there! and a jetty you can jump off. hardly any people there either
  13. nice, thats a whites treefrog aye?
  14. . If you have the holde drilled in the side, you can use a full internal overflow box, or a small internal overflow box if the hole is drilled near the top of the tank. Your other option is to have an external durso, or a combination of an internal box/ external durso.
  15. Well the museum is open 364 days a year, so I cant really do anything on christmas unfortunately as it is all shut down! I will give the animals an extra nice feed on the evening of the 24th though. Im sure the fish would love some caviar! and the rats can have strawberries to replace their boring apple and mixed vegies. I wonder if the packhorse cray likes turkey? hmmm.... I am working on the 29th 30th 31st, 1st and second too so no stopping over xmas. I am spening 2 months doing volunteer work in Jan and Feb though, should be fun. I have three weeks over at Waiheke studying dotterels for the ARC, a week at one of the chickens (of the hen and chickens) doing some weeding (via a little abseiling and stuff too of course) for DoC, and then 2 weeks at the zoo, one week working with primates, and one with carnivores... so action packed summer heading my way- cant wait!
  16. Im working 22nd 23rd 24th 26th 27th etc haha, the animals need feeding!
  17. talk to zaita, he is in wellington
  18. You just need a dish and some vermiculite for the adult crickets to lay in. Use some mesh which has holes large enough for the females to fit their ovipositors through to lay but not big enough for them to eat the eggs. Feed them dog biscuits for protein to stop them eating each other and they also like rolled oats. Make sure they always have water and fresh grass and keep them warm with a 40 watt incadecent bulb. thats about it really. dampend the vermeculite in the egg dishes once every couple of days, and change the dishes every week or two and put them in a warm place for the eggs to hatch.
