    Syphon

Does anyone know what the formula is to calculate flowrate through a siphon. I want to use it to calculate pipe size needed for a DIY W/D filter. The formula would have to incorporate the head over the tank side. Sure you must know where I can get that from John Peet

    What Filter

Man if anyone else is keen on DIY you should check out the sites Jonn1 put up, the last site is soooooo good, think ill be trying a couple of different ones, see what works best. Cheers for the replies Peet ps Would anyone have any Idea why my genio cannister would not be operating at its rated flowrate. I have cleaned all pipes, and tested without media and it has made very little difference. According to a local pump mechanic, impellar pumps either work or they dont. Plus can one buy a new pump in this country???

    What Filter

I have a 5ft x 2 x 2 freshwater tank, I bought a 700L/hr 2nd hand Genio filter, it seemed to be running a bit slowly, so timed its flowrate and its more like 200/300 L/hr. I got the local shop to check out the impellar (nothing wrong) Anyway, I am moving to aus so am thinking about DIY filters, the aim is to have a plant tank and marine tank back to back (very much like the marine and cichlid tank at Redwood aquatics Chch) What is the best filter types for each of these tanks. Theres so much debate about cannister, trickle, scrubbers etc. All I want to know is what works at the lowest DIY price. Plus has anyone got web plans for these filters. I have checked The Krib but cant seem to find quality plans. Catch ya Peet
  5. Hey guys, Ive been away for a year so good to find the new site cranking. I was intrigued by the bumble bee posts as have been stung/bitten by one and was very painful, anyway according to World Book Encyclopedia the bumble bees anatomy is the same as that of a drone bee, only thicker and stings painfully, it can also sting many times
  6. He there adrian, check out the site http://www.thekrib.com for further info, simply work the maths backwards, you know the thickness of the tank, the length and width now just calculate the height for the maximum allowable volume. Theres quite a few good sites out there with similar info, just need to do a search for homemade tanks Cheers Peet [ This Message was edited by: peet on 2001-12-23 23:09 ]

    pH swings

Every book I read has a different idea about whether CO2 should be left going day and night or only during the day. (I am solaniodless) Reason for: being that one reduces the swings in pH as the formation of carbonic acid drops off (During the night) From some of my studies of water quality at canterbury university I've seen that these pH swings occur in the environment and aquatic life has adapted to survive this. What should I do?

    Cold saltwater

Hey Warren,my parents live in the Hawkes Bay so I know how hot it gets, what I was wondering is if the water is only running through the stainless steel coil when a tap is running or is it before your hot water cylinder? (what I mean is how do you get a constant flow throught the coil) Also where in the bay do oyu collect specimens for a rockpool tank and what is the best fish shop in the area for tropical fish and plants Cheers Peet

    Rocks

Thanks Bruce, I have pulled apart my soda stream, seems pretty simple to make up an adjustable valve, I need it for a tank of about 250-300litres, is this to big to use the inverted bell method like the Tetra CO2 dispensers or do I have to inject it into the filter (Have a Genio 700L/H cannister) in which case I will need to have a very fine valve to get down to the Bubble/sec range. Is there another way of perhaps dispensing the CO2 into a device that then regulates the no of bubbles into the tank or filter. Peet

    Cold saltwater

Hey Carol, have you considered purchasing a small gas/electric camping/beer fridge. Then cut a hole in the door andplace your filter box, or a good number of coils of piping inside, then using an insulating wrap around the piping and hole in the door run the pipes back into the tank. I have been working on the idea of a similar tank myself, been having a lot of fun trying to design a tipping PVC plastic gutter to provide wave action. Thinking of running water into the off-balance gutter above the tank, once it reaches a certain volume the gutter will tip pouring water into the rock pool. Hope that helps a little Peet

    Soda Stream CO2

I recently posted a question about soda stream CO2 but has been unanswered, it seems like it would be an ideal way to inject CO2 into a plant tank, any information regarding modifying soda stream valves, cost of refills and duration one cylinder will last before refills will be much appreciated. Cheers Peet

Can you use soda stream bottles for CO2 injection [ This Message was edited by: peet on 2001-08-22 04:24 ]

    Rocks

Hi there, I am trying to find rocks for my aquarium from the canterbury region, does anybody know whether basalt rocks leech dangerous levels of iron into the water, or whether greywacke will remain stable and inert in the aquarium. These 2 types of rock are the most common around this area, Basalt from the mountains and greywhacke from the rivers. Also does anybody have any information on modifying soda stream bottles for CO2 injection, ie: cost of refills, ease of modifying regulator valve, length of time between refills. Cheers Peet
