  1. Lock up your goats as well..... http://www.break.com/index/eagle-drags- ... cliff.html
  2. I love cats.....just can't eat a whole one 8)
  3. Yep spines go through gaiters and thin leather. Thought I would plant some under my daughters bedroom window in a couple of years to keep the boys away.
  4. ASW 20 & 27's are really good ships, you can always store them out at the airfield (Mrs Loopy need never know). Although there is little point in buying a glider as the club have a couple of high performance ships. The Janus in the photo held 2 world records for speed over distance. When you ballast it up with water, it goes like a rocket. But it is very very slippery. My power friends are always suprised at how fast it can get away on you. We also have a LS4 single seater which is great to fly.
  5. Ha! 6ft, try 20m........ Me & my daughter off for a mission, Omarama 2008 Tracking towards Mt Cook
  6. Wow! Mr Loopy 3k would take you way past solo stage in a glider...probably easier to fly than an RC too :-?
  7. Joke I received today.... The seven dwarfs went off to work in the mine one day, while Snow White stayed at home to do the housework and cook their lunch. However when she went to the mine to deliver their lunches, she found there had been a cave-in, and there was no sign of the dwarfs. Tearfully she yelled in to the mine entrance:"hello - is anyone there. Can anyone hear me". A voice floated up from the bowels of the mine: "Australia will win the Rugby World Cup" "Thank god" said Snow White "at least Dopey's still alive"
  8. Thanks Robert, good stuff. As an aside, anyone been watching that programme on the weather on Monday nights? I've seen it before but still really interesting. I am currently keeping an eye on the weather cam at Scott Base as I have a friend down that way at present. Apart from a few days, their weather has been better than ours! http://www.antarcticanz.govt.nz/education/2568
  9. Interesting theory. My rudimentary understanding is that the fan increases evaporation by increasing the kinetic energy in the water molecules at the surface. ie their speed. The faster they are moving, the more energy they have to break the surface tension. As the faster-moving molecules escape, the remaining molecules have lower average kinetic energy, and the temperature of the liquid thus decreases. You can speed up molecules a number of ways but the obvious ones are increasing their temperature or increasing the air movement at the surface and this is what the fan does. Moving air ie wind feels colder than still air through the same process on your skin as the skin moisture molecules average speed is increased. (The air itself is NOT colder) Humidity also affects the rate of evaporation as the surrounding air nears its saturation point, it is unable to pickup anymore water molecules. I sure that someone will correct me if I have any of this wrong

    New PIKES!!!!

Ha! Weather today is fantastic here in the South Island...even at Scott Base the weather is good... http://www.softrock.co.nz/mg/apmc.php?page=26

    New PIKES!!!!

Ha! That reminds me, we have always called tomato source 'Train Smash' in our family...for obvious reasons
  12. We had some Danios disappear on us. The finger was pointed at a particular fish (no names), and the gallows were in construction, when we found that the Danios were probably just jumping out.
  13. I agree with Alan & Poppy. Reporting your experience, as long as it's factual, shouldn't breach any laws. After all Fair Go pretty much does the same. I recon an opinion is also valid as long as the author states its their opinion.

    hi

Yeah I had some suspect service in a CHCH shop. Not rude, and they were busy (Saturday afternoon) but I think they could have done better
  15. OK so what would be the optimum size for a fish room?
  16. We have a few additions to the tank now. We purchased a couple of Chinese Algae Eaters, and man do they live up to their name!!! Last week we bought 6 Danio’s but lost 2 in the first 24 hours (as in no dead bodies, they just disappeared) . The remaining 4 don’t seem to be bothered by the goldfish and even try to push in on the choice bits at feeding time. Likewise the goldfish pretty much ignore them so I’m not sure why we lost them. We also bought a thermometer and the tank stays around 20c so was thinking of maybe buying a heater. If we gradually raised the temperature to 24c maybe we could get a few of the more hardy tropical fish??????
  17. I’m with Luke*, clove oil if proven, and seems its been suggested by the experts here sounds good to me. Hope I don’t have to use it but best to be prepared to reduce any suffering. :-?
  18. venustus...only half the world hate the US???? Personally its more the monkey running the US and I guess by default, the 5% of the population who voted for him :-?
  19. Ira, I would have thought that the process would be much the same for goldfish, except it would take a bit longer???? I'm not sure that they would experience the exploding cells bit before they succumbed.
  20. It hasn’t happened to me yet, but it occurred to me if we get a sick fish and decide the best thing to do would be to put it out of its misery, what is the most humane method? I have heard of people putting their fish in the freezer, is this the accepted method, or is there a faster/better one?
  21. evilknieval....rats are people too
  22. Luke* I think you are probably correct in your assumption that invertebrates (at least the ones we are talking about) don't feel pain. I'm just not sure if this makes feeding live invertebrates to your fish any more ethical than live vertebrates. "Invertebrates show few, if any, of the behaviours that we would recognize as evidence of emotion6. Many invertebrates are cannibalistic, and many eat their young when given the chance. Most have no social behaviour. Although they can respond vigorously to noxious stimuli, even this response is inconsistent. Insects, for example, will continue with normal activity even after severe injury. An insect walking with a crushed tarsus (lower leg) will continue applying it to the ground with undiminished force. Locusts will writhe when sprayed with DDT. However, they will also continue feeding while being eaten by a praying mantid6." And... "Conclusions Although it is impossible to know the subjective experience of another animal with certainty, the balance of the evidence suggests that most invertebrates do not feel pain. The evidence is most robust for insects, and, for these animals, the consensus is that they do not feel pain6."
  23. OK farmchick, is the problem that the mouse is a mammal? I’m not an experienced fish keeper, but I believe people feed their fish live bait. I assume that the live bait are invertebrates like Daphnia and Shrimps? Does this make the difference? Do they have to be extremely hungry to react like this or is it conditioning because this is the way they are always fed? I don't know, just asking the question :-?
