  1. I have a coldwater fish tank inside. It's good there is a specified forum for cold water now. Can anyone tell me of some different types of cold water fish I could have in my tank. I currently have blackmore, fantails and comets. Are there any other types that can live in cold water? I was reading the list of fruit and vege that people feed their fish on the Freshwater forum, but wasnt' sure if they were all tropicals. Thanks Julie
  2. Very interested in this discussion. I only have coldwater goldfish, which I sometimes feed a slice of courgette to. Didn't realise you can give them all sorts of fruit and vege. Is it okay to try different types with coldwater goldfish? I notice all of yours are tropical. Many thanks Julie
  3. Thanks for your replies. I think you are right Ira, they just seemed to swim in there and then get stuck. Since moving the filter away from the side, I haven't had any further fatalities, so fingers crossed. Thanks again.
  4. A couple of nights ago when doing a routine water change, I gave my "Elite" filter a good clean also (pulled it all apart etc). I have it positioned on the rear wall, hard up against the right hand side. This is because my air hose hangs down in that corner and the filter holds it in place. This morning I noticed that one of my fish was missing. When I turned it off I found her totally squashed between the edge of the filter and side glass of the tank. I have just now come back in and noticed that yet another of my beautiful goldfish is missing. I have found that one totally squashed in the same place. I have now moved the filter over so that if a fish swims down there, they shouldn't get stuck. But wonder why all of a sudden this has happened? Do the filters or air bubbles somehow suck the fish down? Has anyone else had this problem? My tank is coldwater and my beautiful fish have been living very happily in there for well over six months. I'm really upset at losing two in one day, because they got squashed. Thanks Julie

    Aquarium Water

He didn't give me the PH reading - just said nothing to worry about. My gold fish are all cold water fantails and blackmores. Sometimes have comets too. Are there other varieties of cold water fish that can live with your standard fantails, comets etc?? Thanks Julie

    Aquarium Water

Hi there I have a cold water fish aquarium with 6 beautiful gold fish. We live just out of town on 3 acres and therefore don't have town water supply with the complications of chlorine. We have just had a new bore drilled for our water supply and I have taken a sample of the water into a local fish shop to be tested. He said our water is really good and nothing needed done with it. If anything at all though, it could be just a touch alkaline. I don't know much about water types etc, and just wonder if anyone could tell me anything about this. I have previously been using my neighbours rain water for doing changes to my tank, but want to start using our own water from now on. I imagine my current fish will be fine with the change if I do it gradually, but if I get a new fish to add to the tank, will it be okay, to go straight into my tank with the bore water? Many thanks Julie Struthers Mosgiel - Dunedin
  7. Thanks for you replies. My tank has been set up for a couple of months now, and I am doing the regular water changes etc as advised. My other 5 fish are all fine and swimming around without a care in the world. I have been to my fish shop last night and brought a tonic which will fix the fungus. He has advised to keep doing regular water changes every day and hopefully this will bring him right. He is still alive today, so I am hoping if I perserveer he might make a miraculous recovery. Thanks J
  8. I am relatively new to goldfish and have already had some help from this forum with regards to setting up my tank. I was away last weekend and when I came home my beautiful chocolate fantail was bobbing around near the bottom of may tank between a plant decoration and the side of the tank. Five other goldfish all fine. I have taken him out and put him in a separate bowl of his own. This was sunday night. It is now Wednesday morning and he is still lying on his side at the bottom of the bowl, but still alive. Every now and then he starts flapping furiously, but this gets him nowhere. I have put a peeled pea in with him, but he hasn't eaten it. Yesterday he has developed white fluffy stuff on his body (nearer the head end of his back). I feel awful looking at him, and don't know whether to euthenaise him, or if there is some possible remedy. He has been fighting for days now, but just doesn't seem to be getting better, or closer to dying for that matter. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Julie
  9. Hi, I emailed earlier about my Cosmo filter and now finally have it worked out to go properly. Only problem, it seems too powerful. It sends the oxy weed flying and bits go everywhere, plus the fish are fighting the current. Nothing calm and peaceful as it should be. Can anyone tell me, if perhaps this is too strong, can they be adjusted (have adjusted bubbles, but doesn't affect the overall pressure), or is this just normal? thanks Julie
  10. Hi I have just set my new tank up tonight with the above filter in it. I was told that this is a pump as well, so won't need a separate one to get air into the water. When I took it out of the box, there weren't any installation instructions. So we have put it together at our best guess. It seemed that there was a cover missing for the outlet. the picture on the box looks like there should be a cover. We have improvised, but now that it's turned on there are no visible air bubbles coming out of the water. There is also an extra piece of adaptor pipe, but we don't know where this goes? Can anyone help us please? We do have the piece of clear tube, which we have attached to the bottom of the outlet. Thanks Julie
  11. Thanks for everyones replies. If the water is hard, what can you add to it? I just live on a lifestyle block (3 acres), so don't think there is an issue with fertiliser. Our neighbours do have a rain water tank, would I be better to use some of their water? Also, can you advise if Blackmoors and fantails will be okay in the hard water. I am just wanting these sort of fish for a start. Thanks Julie
  12. Hi I am just about to buy an aquarium for cold water fish. We are on bore water which is quite high in iron. Is this okay to use in the tank and will I still need to use the water ager? Also, if I get a couple of live plants, how do I plant them? Do I just tuck the roots under the stones in the bottom of the tank? Thanks for any advice.
