I've had four dwarfies over time and all have died for no apparent reason. Most didnt last a few months. I'm not generaly much of a fish killer but I just couldnt win with them, so now I stay clear of em.

Yeah it is. It's still not back to full health but it seems not to be struggling as much. It's still going to the surface for air alot but it's not sinking like a stone anymore. It's a runt of a goldfish but my daughter brought it cause she felt sorry for it, so I hope it pulls through.

Im just wondering how to run 2 tanks next to each other off my one canister? I'm assuming there's some plumbing involved but I'm looking for ideas before I go ahead.
-
Yep. I recon thats good advice. Might need to explain to my daughter the benefits of not overfeeding as well....

Thanx for all the info. I added a salt doasge to the tank to help the sick goldfish recover and I also placed a corner filter in as well to give a helping hand to the main filter. The result overnite is that it has cleared up almost back to crystal. And it looks like the sick goldfish has started swimming with a bit more ease to.....hopefully on his way to full recovery. Thanx again.

Yeah I think the over feeding has done it. I've noticed over the last few minutes that they just keep crapping one after the other. Obviously they are very full......of food.

Ok. I've done a 50% change. Cleaned the filter and added an extra air stone. The water is still quite cloudy but I'll leave it overnite to see if it settles. Thanx for the info

I use wardley tri start and I havent had a drama since this. I'll do a 50% change now and see how I go.

ok. its a 20 gallon tank and both the goldfish are quite small at about 3 inchs. I'm using a hang on power filter which seems to be working fine. I change about 20% every week. Before this outbreak the water had been crystal clear for ages. It could be possible that my daughter over fed them at some stage but I would of thought that a water change would of cleared it back up.

My Goldfish tank has gone all cloudy. It's been established for about 2 months now and it's been getting weekly water changes. I have no idea why its suddenly gone a white cloudy colour. I've done a water change but overnite its gone back to being just as cloudy......any ideas? And now one of my goldfish is acting funny. He keeps sinking. It's a real effort for him to swim and he keeps heading up to the surface and gulping air.....any ideas?

This thread is a very good idea. I've never had much of a problem with algae until recently. I'll post some pix over the weekend to see if I can get any advice.

Yeah thanx for the info. My problem is I'm planning on keeping australian native fish and there doesnt seem to be much data around for them. I'm guessing that being native they would require more room than most other aquarium fish. I guess its one of those things that you cant really find the answer for until you start stocking the tank.

Woohoo. I just picked up an FX5 for an excellant price at a new store that just opened up near here. And there also a slight change in the tank size. I've now decided to go with a 244x76x76cm. I've worked out that it should hold approx 1415 litres. I fiqured that for a small increase in price it was well worth it.

How can I work out what my stocking level should be for my tanks? I thought I heard somewhere that there's a formula for going by how many inches of fish to how litres of water???
-
I have the same tank and the pump is listed at having a 400/l hour rate. I have noticed with mine that it seems to blow alot a light globes..... just went through bout 3 globes in as many months! It's not stocked atm so i'll have to sort that out before going any further. I also found out that its getting much harder to get globes for that model. Apparently the normal fluros were part of the first series of ar's and now they are coming out with a different globe..

70 should be the top to bottom height

I noticed the other day that my 2 cories were breeding in my guppy fry tank. One was spraying eggs everywhere but as soon as they stuck to something they were both eating them all... I'm guessing they will breed again but how do u stop them from eating all the eggs? I thought I was feeding them enough. Is there anything I can do?

Speaking of fishing, I'm finding it hard to decide wether to buy the fish or to catch them. If I catch them from the river, wont they be more shy and inclined to hide all day? If I buy them, then they'll be small for ages and it might seem silly with an 8 foot tank with 3 inch fish in it! Havent decided either way yet. Is 10mm glass ok for the sides and front / back of this size tank?

Thanx for the info. I ended up trimming the val rite back to get rid of the bulk of the algae. I'm using a 20watt globe for a standard 2 foot tank, not sure if thats too little or too much. Theres still a fair bit of the algae in there but i'll have to see how it goes over this week. I only just got it all setup, so Im not too keen of starting from scratch again.

Ive just come back from being away for a week and my tank is over run with some kind of algae i think. I have a val plant up the bank of my 2 foot and its covered in this long (about 3cm) thin algae sort of stuff. It's a grey colour and its grown so much on the val plant that its blocking out all the light to the other plants. I'm thinking the easiest thing to do atm is take the whole plant out??? I seem to be having alot of trouble trying to get the plants (except the val) to grow in this tank. I'm using a 20 watt globe and a diy co2 reactor. I've been using liquid fertilizer and I do a once a week water change. Is there something that I'm doing wrong to get all this algae and how do I get rid of it???

I'll keep an eye out for those titanium heaters. Ok, I've worked out my budget and I still have 2 more weeks before I can order the tank. Is there any last minute things that I could be overlooking? The stand was one near thing. I was going to order the 600mm high one but from what I can gather it'd be a bloody tight fit with the fluval fx5 under it. Will go the higher one instead.

Thanx for the info guys. Never heard of putting poly inside the tank as well...I work for a whitegoods company so we have heaps of spare foam anyways. Does the poly change the water properties at all? Does anyone know what sort of heating setup i would need for a tank this size?

I've finally decided that I need a big tank to complete my collection. Over the next month or so, I'm going to slowly start putting ideas together and I'm hoping to get some feedback from the people on here. The inspiration to setup a big tank has come from my long time wanting of a native australian fish tank. So far I'm thinking of maybe a couple of bass and an eel tailed catfish. Hopefully I'll be able to fit a few more in as well. I've decided to get a 96x24x28inch tank which I've worked out should hold about 1050 litres. Filter wise, Im thinking of the fairly new Fluval FX5 Giant. I've got most things planned out in my head atm but I'm not sure about the heating of such a large tank. I live in a fairly cold climate and it will need at least some heating to keep the temp around the 20 degree mark. Would 2 300watt heaters be ok? or what are the alternatives for heating large tanks without going overboard on the costings? I am planning to put some rocks in the tank as well but I'm not sure of what would be considered as too heavy a rock for the glass bottom. Any help is much appreciated.
