Since TB is a possibility, be very careful when working in your tank e.g. use latex gloves if you have any cuts or grazes on your hands, and wash afterwards. I'm not saying it definately is TB, just saying to be careful until you know for sure

Is the spot white or red?

Turns out I did everything right, and all is well yey Just have to wait it out. I've noticed the red sores on the sick angel have reduced to a mere pink so either the Prazi or Melafix is working, but blue noticed some gill tissue damage on his right gill. -

Ok, so 2mg/L is the dosage required. Vitapet Super All Wormer has 50mg/g So assuming 1 tablet = 1g, then 1 tablet per 25 litres I put in 8, so 25 * 8 = 200L, tank is 225 but take out air + rocks + gravel etc ends up around two hundy. I premixed the tablets in tank water in a seperate container before introducing the horrid mixture. As much as us men love the colour pink, its not the water colour thats annoying, its the pink dust that goes everywhere. I sincerely hope this fixes the problems I'm having because there is about a week's worth of daily water changes ahead judging by the state of the tank floor. If doing this again, I'd recommend adding the mixture between two layers of filter foam in your filter. That way you wouldn't have the dust issue. Out of 1000mg, only 50mg is needed, so essentially I've added 7600mg of crap I didn't need, which makes big mess and probably causes the colouration. Anyway fish aren't bothered by it, in fact some started eating it :-? so fingers crossed it all goes well. Makes me nervous having my tank like that :-? :-? -

Thanks sharn, Yeah the thread is here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/-vp139339.html Drontal Plus has Prazi along with others. Does anybody have any ideas on dosage? Tank is 225 litres, do I just buy a couple of tubes and see what happens??? -
I bought him as 'Assorted Pleco', but assumed he was a Redspot Sailfin (Glyptoperichthys gibbiceps) but he has a big lyretail, and no spots on his sail fin. First picture shows what he looks like, but the second smaller picture shows the colours better. Just curious

woo! Finally found out. It's FLUKES. All the fish are showing signs of having a few e.g. flashing, itchy, scales, becoming more lethargic. My large white angel (who is as tough as nails) has got it bad, and showing the other symptoms red veins (tail and body), swollen gills, having trouble breathing, etc The other fish may have died from a bacterial infection, but I think this was certainly bought on by flukes. If I am wrong with my diagnosis please let me know! Also can somebody please tell me what I should do to get rid of this? Sooner I can get something, the more likely I don't lose another angel! If it is flukes, I want to anhilate the buggers, I heard something about dog wormer? All I have on-hand is Melafix and Stress Coat, but I've got money (beleive it or not, woohoo), so can go shopping for whatever I'm going to need tomorrow. Ammonia tested at 0, pH is 7, temp is 27C, did a 30% water change yesterday using stress coat to remove the chlorine. Oh and on the way home from buying a testing kit, I got another two little angels, they're too cute -
I'm definately not using the correct terminiology here, but here goes: When cichlids challenge each other they flare their kills and stand tall, to look bigger. Firemouths have a large gill cover that they bring out, its bright orange (hence Firemouth) which makes them look much larger and more scary. Older they get, bigger the gill cover gets. When mine get excited e.g. water change or bloodworms bonanza, instead of just chasing each other around the tank, they will do one-on-one battles where they basically flare out their gill covers and spin in circles until somebody gets tired. Looks quite cool. I've got an Angel that seems to REALLY hate my Firemouths, and got to watch an Angel vs Firemouth stand-off today (nobody was injured, just looks awesome).

eck while treating the tank with melafix, another two angels had the same problem. Did a water change and ended the treatment on Saturday, two angels are dead this morning. Exact same symptoms previous. All 3 fish came from the same tank at a LFS, so not sure if thats related, I think its more to do with them being the 3 smallest angels. -
Yep, both Angelfish and Firemouths are cichlids. They're just on the friendlier side of the family. Here is some video, I'm having a hoot making these little clips, but you can see the problem I'm having with the angels  http://www.starion.co.nz/video/MVI_0857.AVI http://www.starion.co.nz/video/MVI_0858.AVI Firemouths are still too young, they're not territorial nor aggressive yet, but the largest does the occasional harmless chase to indicate dominance. They're starting to play with their throats more and more and occasionally you get a display after a bloodworms feeding. I'm just never holding the camera when they do it. When older they'll pick favourite rocks and defend their small areas. They dont really bite, they just 'flare up'. They don't seem to have any problem with any fish in the tank, only reason I wouldn't put them in a community situation is because they will suck up anything that fits in the mouth.
-
Yeah they need sleep. I give them a bit of 'twilight' as well. Normally I give mine 14 hours of fluro light, and about 2 hours of just house lights, and 8 hours of sleep in the dark. Its not a hard schedule, but I try to stick to it. My little Firemouths have a special colour pattern they only seem to display when sleeping, kind of like pyjamas, cracks me up.

Get a smaller filter, perhaps a simple undergravel (driven using the air pump). Its a small tank so you should be fine with basic filtration. With your fish choices, I wouldn't be too worried about water parameters either. All I beleive you need to do is: -> put gravel in a bag with a bit of water -> put guppies in bag -> drain completely and clean tank using a rag and clean water to remove algae build up -> install cheap undergravel filter, and hook up air pump -> put gravel in -> fill using warm water and add Water Ager (to remove chlorine) -> check temp (between 23-28 degrees), and setup heater -> put fish in -> do partial water changes (25-35%) once a week using water ager (or if the tank water ever doesn't look right e.g. cloudy) If we're talking Siamese Fighting Fish and/or guppies, neons etc in a small tank, then the list above will do you fine Most important thing is to have fun with the tank! Oh and the purpose of a filter in your tank, is more to build up bacteria that eat nasties in the tank like ammonia and nitrites, rather than to pick up bits floating in the water, which is why its not a good idea to turn it off for long periods (e.g. overnight) as the bacteria will die, and also why an undergravel filter will do you fine.

Thanks Lynda. Thankfully wasn't too attached, only had him 3 days and he only cost $6. I had named him Flappy though. I hope my fish like the smell of teatree, I spilt some Melafix on myself and had gypsy fair flashbacks. -
Mine runs the same as above. Bigger stuff on the bottom. Ceramic Noodles on bottom, and filter wool up top. Mine is only a Jebo 810 so I only have two small trays. If you have the fine filter wool at the bottom, then none of the organic matter will make it to your bio-balls etc and the filter will clog up very quickly. Sounds like you need to swap your trays around.

Oh well, he died. I'm guessing the stress of being moved stuffed up his immune system and all hell broke loose. The other fish look like they're on Prozac since I started feeding bloodworms, so think it was just that one fish. On another note, one of the other angels seems to have a mild case of fin rot or something similar and one of my Firemouths has a bite mark (from another Firemouth). I've got a bottle of MelaFix on hand and was about to add it when I read 'anti-bacterial' and realised that it might not be good for my 'good bacteria' since the tank has only just cycled. Should I rush off tomorrow and fix my spare tank to create a melafix holding area, or will it be fine in my main tank? Dont want to kill the nitrogen cycle now that its working, so thought I should ask. And do I need to half dose with a young Pleco in there? -
Hey guys, One of my angels has been a bit sick the last few days, taking lots of big rapid breaths. Wasn't scared of me or the other fish, and would come to the surface at feeding time but was unable to eat. I put him in the tank on Sunday and he was fine, problems started about Monday morning. Then 5 minutes ago I was downstairs and noticed the scene below, so I video taped it, and it got rapidly worse, and now he is behind a rock and on his side (no doubt seconds from death). Just want to know if this is stress related or something I need to treat the tank for. http://www.starion.co.nz/video/MVI_0854.AVI http://www.starion.co.nz/video/MVI_0856.AVI Videos are around 3.8Mb each. Water is clean, all other fish (5 angels, 3 Firemouth, 1 Sailfin Pleco) are full of energy with fins standing high and big stomachs because I probably feed them a bit much. Did a 30% water change (using Stress Zyme) on Sunday before putting new fish in.

I'd go with Neon Tetras and guppies. They're friendly, and dont eat each other. Also they're cheap Guppies can be quite a bit of fun with a little moss plant thrown in as well, as they will breed quite happily. For a first time tropical owner, the cuteness of guppies and seeing the little babies wins hearts. Cichlids are known to be aggressive and territorial in general and I agree with sharn that your tank might be a bit small for that. If you get a tank later on, I'd suggest investigating in to these fish though, I love them. Well I love them when they're not beating each other up anyway :-?

Reminds me of that time I crossed an Oscar with a goat.

I'm currently using a 30W 3ft single tube that sits on the tank. So anything is an upgrade. Pop me a price for a 3ft double If the price is good it'll work out well. I want to put more money towards a new tank and filter. Oh and thanks sharn for the reply earlier I'm not sure how Proper pH works, just looked like a wonder cure that'd make my life easy, and just from that I should have known not to bother with it!
-
Sorry to hear about the fish Caryl On a postive note, when your new electric yellow babies grow up you'll have a story to tell.
-
Sounds good Have to wait until I get paid though. I'm at the 'collecting up silver coin' stage in my finances. You selling those lights too, or keeping them for a rainy day?
-
hmm I found the opposite, but I've seen 6.6-7 before. I guess the varying opinnions suggest they do fine in basically anything, and that I should just leave it alone. What comes out of our taps?
-
When you boil it, all the tannins come out, so I dont think there would be much more to release although I imagine I didn't get it 100% all out. Also changes the colour of the wood, goes to a much more whiteish colour.
