hehe yeah Well DSE was out of the Quad AND gates I needed, so went for a hike to jaycar, couldn't find it! I've emailed them to ask where they're hiding but wont be any electronics tonight unless I can do what I want with the NAND gate, I worked out its possible, but it hurts my brain.* Dentist is removing $1200 from my wallet tonight, so doubt I'll be doing too much more for a week or two. Unless someone wants an as new Xbox for $80. * see if I can work this out while I'm typing Feed Pin 1 the clock pulse Feed Pin 2 +4.5V Pin 3 will output an inverse clock signal (because when pulse is off or LOW, its not equal to HI, so output is HI) Feed Pin 5 with the output from 3 Feed Pin 6 the output from the decade counter on outputs 0-7 (so constant 4.5V until the 8th pulse). Pin 4 should output the half wave I need. Because NAND will be true when the pulse from pin 3 is off (real pulse is ON, but its inverted). So in ten clocks I should get FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH FLASH OFF OFF then repeat, and it should be in time with the clock pulse which will just beat 10 times and repeat. I've got a 14 LED bargraph module wired up, so I can see wtf is going on. Got an NPN transistor delivering extra current, the 4011 drops to 2V running a NAND gate + 1 LED  so anyway, 4.8V now, LED probably not liking it but its only a flash. Reason I'm doing this is so I can do async data transfer to the serial register, then output 9 (pulse 10) on the decade counter can tell the register to output. Result from this will be a serial to parallel circuit for running common LCD displays, using only two pins on the microcontroller.

Don't get too carried away on the disease front. I'd avoid medications as well, tonic salt is probably the best idea at this point. Meth Blue isn't an antibiotic, and stains everything. Doesn't hurt if you have a quarantene tank with one fish in it, but don't add it to the main tank as it wont have an effect worth the pain. Sounds like something is making their immune systems weak. You sound new to having fish inside, so I'd wager the likely cause of your fish getting ill would have likely been an ammonia and/or nitrite spike. This sorts itself out with time as the good bacteria build up in your filter (hence the term 'mature tank'). If you want to test for this in the future, you can get the test kits at your local pet store. But yeah as above, it wont be mould, it'll be a type of algae, in tropical tanks we have plecs etc that eat it, but in coldwater you need to scrape it off.

Unheated garage is why mine is expensive. It's a double garage that we park the car in, not a fishroom/garage. Often in winter 300W wasn't enough to keep a 200L tank above 24C
-
Mine are in an unheated garage and it's estimated they're costing over $200 a month. I don't have many tanks either. A lot of money goes in to running them, and I have other projects that need money as well as living expenses. Because of this living situation I do not have any big tanks (biggest are 4ft x 1.5ft x 1.75ft). For an indoor 6ft tank, I doubt the expenses would blow your budget unless you're the kind of person who is digging for coins to buy milk at the end of the week. There will be a hike in the power bill, but if its in a warm room it shouldn't be too dramatic. If it's indoors for display, I wouldn't insulate more than just the back unless its in a cabinet or something.

This photo was taken two days ago: He gets a small portion of african cichlid pellets 4 x a day on the autofeeder, then tonight I came home and he ate two slices of courgette, half a handful of african cichlid pellets, flakes, and still wanted to eat my finger. After I saw what he did to that poor courgette, he aint getting no where near my fingers! Can't beleive how different he looks to that old photo, that can't have been more than 3 months ago?

Such a genius Couldn't work out why my circuit wasn't making any sense. I bought the wrong damn chip, I need an AND gate not a NAND gate! Can't beleive I forgot what the first N stgands for (for those who don't know, it means 'NOT AND'. Thankfully the chip I actually need has the same pin layout, so just plug it in and it'll work. I redid the circuit from scratch on a new prototype board, MUCH better. Didn't even get to touch the shift register yet, probably wont tomorrow either. Just want to get my pulses sorted.

legendary info there Foxglove I bought a power meter, gonna chuck it in the garage pre-insulation. $24.95 at Dick Smiths.
-
When I first got my gg: Have got a new pic, and he's much larger now, but can't upload until I get home. Last night he worked out how to eat the pleco's courgette! Greedy bugger. He's on an auto-feeder as well.

I've never had to clean my filter pipes. Only time clogs occur is usually pond snails that dot fit through the spray bar. CF500 is a very small external filter. Haven't seen Jebo online, but just go to hutt pets, $175 for an 819.

When Warren said L35 I thought it was a typo, didn't realise he meant L35! Ordered 3 LM35DXZ's (precision temp sensor) from South Island components. Hopefully they'll do the job (when I get there). Got reemed on shipping. Tonight is shift register night! Yeee hah
-
Yeah sorry I forgot to respond to Warren's post with regards to the PID. The reason I'm using a microcontroller is so I can develop this process I'm a software developer, so its far easier for me to write a program to do it than to use analog systems or complicated chip combinations. I wanted to make it learn and store its results on an EEPROM, thereby auto adjusting itself for any sized aquarium, but I can't do that with this one (08M), as I'd need an 18X or better at least. So for the interim, perhaps just a single sensor and go with a less precise system of running the heater until x seconds is reach AND temp is 0.1C higher? Will experiment when I get there If I get an LM335 and calibrate it, I'll need 25C water, any ideas for very accurate temp measurements so I can be sure I've got 25C water? Who else would sell temp sensors like that? So far only two models on Jaycar/DSE/Surplus, LM335 and DS1280.

Doing so could result in a few brilliant blacks that CAN swim. Quite common to breed back to the original line to restore lost strengths. For the first few goes you'll get lots of plains, sick plains, and sick brilliants, but should be a few that are good brilliants, or if its recessive you may have to inbred lots of them. Fun Fun with DNA.

All good, just wanted to make sure tonic did white spot too. All good. Be careful, it stains as meth blue is actually a dye.
-
Tonic? Didn't they have White Spot Cure in a bottle? Does Tonic work for whitespot? I'll check my bottle at home later.

I've got two tanks that exact size. Both run Jebo 819's and are clean. FX5 wont' be too much, and you'd be able to get your water purer than a nun. I've had Fluvals before (e.g. 304 404) and I never found any benefit to it over the Jebo, except they were smaller and pumped less. I haven't owned an Eheim, but don't need to, Jebo does 1200/hr and something like 6 media trays? which come with media in them and pads and bio-foam for like $175. AquaOne CF1200 as Ira mentioned is basically the equivilent for same price range as well.
-
Yeah exactly. People are so intolerant of others these days.
-
Funnily enough its called whitespot 1. Turn tank temp up (say 28ish) 2. White spot rememdy ASAP 3. Dose every tank that has a fish with any signs of it 4. Continue treatment for a week, do gravel vacs whenever you can to pick up the cysts Need to dose soon because the drug kills the hatching disease, not the white spot that's already on the fish. Takes around 7 days usually. Warmer the tank the shorter it takes. Make sure to do it for at least a week, and make sure no carbon in your filter, even if it looks like its gone there can still be cysts in the gravel ready to hatch and start again. It can kill quite fast, so don't fluff around (quite fast as in a couple of days, not minutes or anything)

Yes there is, smokers enjoy it. That's like banning car racing because you might get hurt, or banning marathons because an old lady got tripped up once. If anything they should be looking at ways to make smoking less addictive, so it could be enjoyed without being a dependancy.
-
The US has a lot more freedom than we do here, unless your mexican or black I mean.
-
Yeah they do that, and will do it to other fish as well. Love the colour and acitivity, but they're territorial and as they get older, so on my 'do not buy' list along with chinese algae eaters. It helps if you give them areas they can call their own, like a little castle or something that they can sleep in during the day, that way they'll defend this spot rather than the whole tank. The less they see each other the less problems you'll have.

[img=http://i319.photobucket.com/albums/mm456/fishoe/Picture754.jpg] will turn in to: For really big pictures just paste the link lilke you did above, for small pictures just put around it with no spaces.

aww poop If you've got your photo hosted on photobucket or imageshack or snapfish etc, put the link in here, and I'll show you how it should look in your posts.

Totally agree. Have felt like migrating overseas for a while now, and this is why. The term 'nana state' used early is getting quite accurate for NZ. Know a guy who got a ticket for doing 52 in a 50 zone a month ago (yeah thats legal if you missed that one when it came through). My fathers office couldn't have an air con unit fitted to their factory because one person could see it from their house and didn't like it (guess it blocked the view of the factory window) (thanks resource consents act). Just two recent examples of how pathetic things are.

*gasp* By thermostat I do you mean thermistor? I wanted something that could be calibrated and preferably linear. Hoping to find a sensor thats already waterproof with flying leads as well, would make it so much easier. Not too cool for analoge though, the temp reading from whatever sensor I use is voltage based, I just measure the voltage and convert it. I get a number between 0-65535 where 0 is 0v and 65535 is 5V. The temp setting will likely be the same, probably just use a potentiometer, measure the voltage etc Maybe later on I'll make the temp setting digital, but the poor 08M only has 4 outs/ins. My main goal this week is to make the LCD say stupid things, I'll get there Hoping I can fit this project on the 08M, its got tiny memory (80 lines). It's a tiny 8x2 screen. It looked bigger on the interwebs
