  1. Those gauges are never accurate, but its much better than having nothing at all. You'll also find that most thermometers for aquariums vary by up to 5 degrees in accuracy with some types. AquaClear are the least obtrusive, they're thin glass and dont have a big hat. Our LFS recommends them, but I'm really liking these Elite heaters (but they are obtrusive visually). I've got about 6 AquaClears, all developed an internal mist quickly but it hasn't affected the operation of any of them, and they seem to do a good job at keeping all my tanks at stable temps.
  2. Yeah my bad, sorry guys, AquaOne is fully submersible  I wonder what I was looking at then
  3. When cleaning your tank, unless the water is really really bad you dont want to drain that much water out, and avoid the use of hot water because the organisms/bacteria that live on your equipment, in the water, on the gravel etc are the ones that eat excess food and process ammonia and nitrites etc Its not such a drama in your case because its a snail tank, but thought I'd pass on that information anywho. Just the occasional gravel vac and a whipe of the glass is all you should really ever do on an aquarium. If the water is eww then 50% change, but generally not more than 20% is advised. I've had the little red worms before in the past too, think they're bloodworms? Sorry I'm not much of a worm person, dont know much about them. Any fish you have will LOVE them though. Why did you dose Flourish Excel? Thats expensive stuff and only really needed with strong lighting and in conjunction with another fert such as Flourish. I mean, it can't hurt, certainly a good product, just a pain in the wallet lol You should totally get some white cloud mountain minnows to hang out with your snails though
  4. Page 19 is where the action starts Also didn't know JBL made aquarium paint sets
  5. Well thats good! Box said that they aren't when I looked recently, our LFS just started stocking the glass ones. If yours are still going after 2 years then they're certainly not as bad as I had assumed.
  6. Oh and AquaClear and AquaOne often get confused. The thin glass ones with black internals and the small grey knob for adjustment is AquaClear, and it's AquaClear you normally see in your average LFS.
  7. Elite heaters - Awesome! Mid-range as far as price goes, easy to adjust, look great, are fully sumbersable and just are fab. Jebo - either work great or fail completely, mine all work great are easy to adjust and cheap. AquaClear - once they've been setup can be annoying to adjust, and there is no guide to a rough estimate of temp, otherwise a very reliable heater, also thin profile. These are recommend by our LFS as the best cheap option. Masterpet - HORRIBLE, do not touch these, if you do keep the top out of the water as they will fill with water, and if you try to disassemble them to get the water out they break. They are not fully-submersible. AquaOne Glass - never used them, but they're non-submersible so I put them in the same bag as Masterpet. AquaOne Stainless w/external thermostat - have only heard good things, have heard of one failure with the thermostat unit but thats it, owners report more accurate temp control and the external thermo makes it damn easy to adjust. Jager - best in the business, but with a price to match Fluvaltronic - reputable name, never used one. Most important thing is to look on the box for 'FULLY SUBMERSIBLE' if they're not then you have to keep the top of them out of the water all the time and its a total PITA.
  8. Oh and yeah we know live fish is bad ... much to Helen's dismay lol We were at Animates last weekend and she goes 'would Jimmy eat tadpoles?', lady serving us wasn't too impressed.
  9. Awesome Exactly what I was after. The vitamin tablet in the food idea is gold, I never thought of that. I've got some multi vitamins I dont take because the pills are the size of a small truck. I'll use those. Any vauge ideas on quantiy? or do I just chuck some in when I'm making the food? And yeah we make our own food, have been slack lately as we had to throw our last batch out, important to note to RINSE the meats before mixing in, especially the chicken liver, the liver run off was seriously making the water go eww and the fish couldn't breath, had to throw it out. We've got a food processor and freezer space dedicated to it, so another small batch can't hurt He settled in to his new tank alright, got up this morning and he was attacking the heater, then came up to say hello when I came over. He used to attack the heater in the other tank to, and never does it when I'm watching, so I'm worried I've accidently taught him to use it as a bell
  10. You wouldn't clean it. If the bio area is big enough you never need to open filters because they'll rot stuff down until its soluable before they get a chance to clog and it gets taken out with water changes. When he did the piping I assumed he'd have a sump or something though?
  11. Wunder Tonic has meth blue in it anyway, plus some other bits (FYI) Its my personal beleif, that the stress caused by manually applying medication exceeds its benefit, its a personal beleif, and others may disagree, but personally I'd do one of these: 1) Put her in a smaller tank with clean water and Furan2 2) Large waterchanges on current tank, keep the water perfect and well aerated, and reduce lighting temporarily Furan2 seems to be the god of medications, its the only medication I've used that hasn't let me down time after time. Only downside is its like $18 a sheet, so it takes a god-like wallet to be able to afford to treat your main tank, hence the use of a hospital tank. I have 2-3 year old Firemouths too, and neither have had any health problems, so age shouldn't be an issue. How do you know its a girl? I've been trying to sex mine, has been driving me nuts, I can't work it out Edit: Oh and I do want to say, if the Wunder Tonic is helping, dont stop doing what you're doing because of my thoughts, if its working thats awesome
  12. Yeah thats an awesome accomplishment But I do have to say 'apple snails, PLANTS?!?', I'd rather pass on the snails, as much as I love the idea of eggs hanging from my Arcadia T5 fittings!!%$#!!! Would be awesome, you'd be able to actually see fish schooling more wildlike. Those Schwartz Corys look rad.
  13. I'm a Jebo fan too. We've got two 819's and an 810 all running great. We only paid $149 for the 819's though, includes media everything. I did hear that the AquaOne model has a hole that lets you fill the cannister right to the very top to make first time starts easier, the Jebo doesn't have this. This is the only difference I've heard of so far, owners of both so they're quiet, reliable, and good value. I'll always buy Jebo because our LFS stocks the 819 for $149 and it's always there, dont have to order it in.
  14. I totally forgot about those. If you're not much of a DIY person, you can also buy those Feeding Rings, I wouldn't pay more than about $5-10 for one, but they're a ring with a suction cup attached as described above.
  15. Trick is to turn the pump off for a minute or so while they eat If there is any food left after 5 minutes, then thats too much food, so you should never need to have it off for more than a minute or two. After about half an hour of being off beneficial bacteria start to die off, but normally when it's off for longer than 30 minutes there isn't anything you can do anyway! Enjoy your WCMM
  16. Well I asked Ben and he said they were Flying Fox (and they ordered them in as 'Flying Fox'), but he told me he could order me in an SAE if I needed it. I was in there looking for a thread algae eater. So if they are SAE, then the importer is doing a sneaky. I thought they were Flying Fox tho because they looked more gold than silver to me? I'll have to check again now I have all the info about them. I compared them on the day to the Flying Fox at animates, and they looked the same. Guess it can't hurt to take a drive over to the hutt and check it out. I'll let you know.
  17. Na most fish stores sell those hatchery kits, they're useless, you can tell if its a good store because if you ask they'll say 'psst make your own'.
  18. Hey guys, I know this could have probably been put in a better section, but I wanted a bit more traffic to help get some opinnions quickly. I bought an adult green severum, he's about 20-25cm long and very wide. When we bought him he had 'hole in the head and lateral line disease' (HTH for short). The holes on the top of his head started to heal up, however now a large section above his left eye is becoming a problem. So we're going to move him out of the oscar tank and give him his own 200L tank with better filtration, so water quality and stress - check and check, this only leaves food. What do you guys feed your severums, or what do you recommend as a healthy diet? I feed my young golds flake, bloodworms etc and they're fine, but this big guy has been eating mostly brand-x cichlid pellets and the occasional bit of mince. I've got a contact who I'll talk about vet prescribed meds with when I get around to it, but environment + food are my first ports of call. Any thoughts would be appreciated, in paticular advice on food Thanks in advance, Jono
  19. Exciting stuff!!! Dibs on first sales! hehe Best of luck, sounds like you're going to have a good first spawn. Make sure to keep some of those young for yourself though They look gorgeous. Good to see you back on the forums too dude, btw Mark's kribensis just became great grandparents! (and I artifically raised them too!).
  20. Hutt Pets in Lower Hutt has a tank with Otto's inside at present, also lots of flying fox, but no SAE (but can be ordered).
  21. Didn't work Found an adult pond snail cruising the base of the tank. I'll just get snail-rid this weekend then.
  22. Sweet as But I'm going to call them 'fries' from now on lol
  23. WCMM fry are fairly tolerant as far as fries ( sorry Caryl) go. I haven't raised any myself but most fry have the same requirements: - Clean aerated water - Stable temperature - Food First off, the water needs to be clean, but dont do water changes (unless you have to). Secondly, stable temp, if you're tank is dropping real cold at night, it might be a bit too much for the little guys. As far as I know this isnt a big problem with WCMM, but if you wake up to them all dead then it's a likely scenario. If this is happening, a cheap heater turned down real low (like 18C) will stop the water going too cold overnight. Third, never move the fry, if you move anybody move the parents. It'd be good if you told us what you did the last two times because then we would be able to clearly say what might have gone wrong. I do hope that something from above has helped you Sorry I couldn't be more WCMM specific but I thought it's at least a good start to your thread.
  24. lol Fries    Nice.
