  5. no i haven't done any water tests never have don't have the test kits been set up since about april - jebo 109L tank. its got 5 neons, two dwarf gouramies, it had 4x loaches (now 3), 4 x glass cats and three teeny bristlenoses haven't added anything new for at least 2 months. man i can't believe this, now both the bigger loaches are both breathing funny, the little one seems ok, and ur right caryl they are both looking v red around the gills. have done 2 x 40-50% water changes in the last 3 days already but no improvement. am also going to do another one today - i did buy a new bottle of dechlorinator tho - stress zyme? maybe the bottles contaminated!! i'll do a water change today without using it maybe it will help. someone pls help!!!
  6. hi all i'm in a bit of a panic. yesterday night i noticed one of my clown loaches was having trouble breathing - he kept flaring his gills and breathing really rapidly, plus he was hiding under the plants, wasn't interested in eating either. no spots of injuries to his body at all. day before he was fine. i did a fifty percent water change and then added carbon to the filter. but this morning he turned up dead now this afternoon a 2nd clown loach (same size) is breathing really heavily and not eating at all. i don't know what to do!! the other two clowns seem ok just swimming about and eating normally, i'm terrified of losing another one should i do another water change? just wait things out? eek i don't know someone help!!

    Blue Rams

hey there, I just bought two new blue rams yesterday - normal ones not those balloon ones everyone goes on and on about. but i think both of them are boys! boohoo and now they're chasing each other around the tank! do u guys reckon i can take one of them back to animates i'm worried they'll hurt each other. btw how can i tell if they're boys or girls. i've been told about the red belly - but i thought one of them had a pinkish belly but maybe i was just seeing things
  8. well its 620mmx 370mm x 435mm + has no joints. will the stuff in my filter die if its out of the water? should i just have lots of buckets so i can transport the filter media soaked in water + take as much of the original water as i can to the new house?
  9. i finally got my new tank up and running with all my fishies settled in and now i have to move the whole tank in 2 wks time! are there any precautions i have to take? I've got a jebo r362 now all cycled with my babies all nice and happy + growing big (esp the loaches + bristlenoses!) and i'm just worried about them surviving the trip across town. takes about 10 mins drive to the new house, but should i drain the whole tank and put them in buckets or just half drain the tank and move the whole lot? its a planted tank with driftwood and: 4x clown loaches (smallish) 3 baby bristlenoses 2 x dwarft neon gouramies 4 glass catfish 5 neon tetras anyone out there with experience in moving (successfully!!) tanks pls let me know!
  10. hey al i noticed a similar thing on my blue ram - except it comes and goes its up for a day or two then goes down again - i wonder what it is too but doesn't seem to bother him much. btw hows everything going? long time no hear sounds like ur tank is fully stocked now what've u got swimming around now? i'll come and visit u soon.
  11. remember u promised me ur firstborn Al....
  12. Just got a pair? of neon dwarfs bout 2 wks ago, have settled in nicely into the tank but now the male is chasing the female around and generally bullyin her now and again. the LFS person told me to watch out for this - so far the male hasn't caused any damage to her but i'm worried! should i try separating them or maybe swapping either the male or the female? i was hoping they would just live happily together!
  13. hi all i'm having a bit of an issue at the moment. I've still got ich in my tank! it disappeared about 2 1/2 wks ago, (after i raised temp to 29-30 degrees and added salt as per ppl's suggestions) and then few days later it came back! I've had 2 clowns who've persistently got the whitespots for the last 2 wks, no resolution - they are eating normally and acting normally and don't seem bothered by it at all, but last week i lost a blue ram who had the spots for 2 days and then promptly died. after that death i started to panick and so dosed my tank with Wunder white spot cure (malachite green) as per the instructions (1mL per 20L then 1mL per 40L after 3 days). Its been 1 1/2 wks since i started treatment but the white spots are still present on 2 of my clowns (not the other 2). And now my 2nd blue ram has today developed white spots and has been v listless with clamped fins! I'm frantic with worry! i've isolated the sick ram in one of the livebearer containers as thie other fishies seem to be picking on him. what should i do???
  14. I've finally decided i want rams + clownies in my tank. its been 1 1/2 months since i set my tank up, which now consists of: 4 clown loaches, 5 neon tetras, 4 glowlights, one blue balloon ram + one gold ram (stolen from the tank at work!) in a heavily planted 109L jebo aquarium. Oh and 4 glass catfish which are extremely shy! I had an small angelfish last week but moved him out after i lost my male blue ram last week - suspected homicide! found him floating at the top of the tank with a large chunk missing from his neck very suspicious! Plus one of the neons mysteriously disappeared too, no sign of the body yet! can i keep more than two rams in a tank? I just moved in the golden ram today and the remaining blue one chased him around for 5 mins then pretty much left him alone. I really like rams i find them v cute with great personalities! I'm still keeping up with my 1-2 x weekly 25% water changes, hopefully i won't lose any more fish now that the angelfish has been removed!
  15. i tried it as well and it got rid of the hairy brownish+ green algai that was all over my plants! was great! do i just do it as a one off or keep adding it daily/weekly?
  16. Wow Al! ur tank looks so great!! i'm so jealous!! I wish my tank was that big! i'm considerin re-aquascaping my tank coz my plants are growing absolutely everywhere its crazy!! need to start trimming everything up! keep us all posted btw i'll c u on sat!
  17. hey al! yay u got ur new tank u must be so happy!! my loaches are still spotty but i got 1 new gold angel so pretty i can't wait till i get some new ones once everything is cleared up! can't wait till u get ur photos posted up!
  18. white spots are all gone except from one clown the small clown is absolutely covered with spots for 1 wk now and its not going away. he's still active + eating well, but i raised the temp to 29-30degrees and it still not any better. In total i've had the raised temp + salt for 3 wks n not eradicated it yet! if its not better in the next few days i'm gonna quit with the salt + try a traditional meds instead - anybody got any recommendation + dosages? oh PS i think the salt is killing my plants one of them feathery plants has gone all brown + straggly had to remove it today
  19. just came back from holiday - fishies are all doing ok, i added another 2 last wk, one small one same size as the other two. problem is that the little one is now absolutely covered in white spots!!!! i dunno why it just appeared 1 wk ago and hasn't gotten any better at all. he's still v active + eating normally, and no sign of spotting on any of the other loaches. i raised the temp to 30degrees and the tank has been 'salted' for over 3 wks now so i'm not sure what else i can do! PS btw all fishies still alive yay!
  20. can anyone recommend some good stores in wellington i can visit? will be passing through there on Wed afternoon thought i might have a nosey around.
  21. Hi all just to let u all know... fishies still alive yay thanks to all the advice everyone is giving me! all signs of ich are now gone from clown loaches, a couple of the tetras had ich 2-3 days ago but cleared up after 1 day! still continuing with salt + heat treatment for the next 2 wks. Now I have another set of problems! 1) the plants are kinda going brown? someone already advised me about this on this forum so just persevere and keep up the water changes right? 2) my blue rams are getting v territorial + chasing my clowns around! a friend told me that its ok and normal esp if the rams are male and female.. but can they damage the clowns esp since they haven't got scales? 3) I'm going to go away for 4 days next week and need to find some suitable form of feeding! are those 'weekend' blocks any good? or just buy an automatic feeder?? Thanks to all who've helped me the last few wks re: probs with my tank!
  22. Update - so far I've added 2 1/2 Tbs salt gradually over last 2 days + up temp to 29-30degrees. all fish still alive, clowns much much more active dunno how long this'll last!! i think there's something wrong with my heater or temperature gauge tho... i put it up to 28degrees and it heated my tank up to 30degrees plus!!! but fishies still doing OK looking a little better than b4 and eating v well. Will keep tank 'salted' for 10 days as u instructed thanks
  23. Help help!! Have a brand new tank and i've just noticed for the last 2 days one of my clowns has been v lethargic + hiding a lot. I looked v closely at him today and he's got 2 little spots on his head and some on his tail! There's so many differing opinions on wat to do for him, So I've raised the temp to 28-29 degrees, and added 2 Tbs of salt in the water (have a 109L Jebo 362 tank). But i've read that i should be adding up to 2-3Tbs per 20L??!!! help i wanna get rid of the whitespot!
  24. oh yay i can't wait till i see ur setup when i next come back up to Akl! when are you getting it? u gonna put any fish in at the beginning  joking only!! i dunno if the filter is doing well... the pipe the water runs through and the filter wool is starting to build up some browney stuff.. i dunno if its algae or what?! hopefully nothing too scary. Lets hope the fishies last over the wkend!
  25. thanks all for all your help + concern just an update... have had the tank for 5 days so far... did one water change 2 days ago, will do another one tonight just to stave off those darn nitrates + poisonous stuff. Right now the fishies are being v active, especially the clown loaches they're giving everything a once over and it almost looks like they're 'cleaning' the plants?! i dunno if thats normal i hope so. so far 0 losses... fingers crossed!
