  1. they laid again today... 4th batch now... i really want some babies this time
  2. hurray i caught all three of them! man they've gotten big one of them was so determined to stay put in his hidey hole in the driftwood he wouldn't come out for a whole hour! had to turn off the light and wait patiently for him so i could take the driftwood out of his new tank. thanks for all the advice! btw are bristlenoses usually vegetarians? i've never heard of them eating eggs before??!! is this normal????
  3. does anyone know how to catch bristlenoses? i've got 3 in my tank and want to shift them out to other tanks because my blue rams look ready to lay again. last time they laid i caught one of my bristlenoses eating the eggs!!! unbelieveable!! i thought they were vegetarians!!!
  4. does anyone know if sterbai corys school + mix with juli corys? got a tank with only one sterbai which is looking super lonely and i wanna get him some mates but can't get any sterbai ones here in Palmerston. Can get juli corys from auckland tho. does anyone know if they'll be ok together?
  5. hi ron, yeah discus are going good. the blue diamonds have come out of hiding now which is great! but haven't set up the ar-980 yet coz waiting for my new filter media + heater to arrive - but coz its holidays its taking ages!! so frustrating having an empty tank!! i've decided to put it in my room that way i can look at them all the time my bf thinks its crazy but that's ok. i'll pm u about the plants. i'm now on the hunt for a really nice piece of driftwood to put into the tank i'm gonna try to stick java fern on it like alan's managed to
  6. does anyone have potted plants for sale? am willing to pay for postage. am in process of setting up 2 x plants - looking for java fern + swords in particular, also any low light plants - crypts maybe? i dunno how well other plants would do with low light, vals maybe? suggestions would be great! cheers! Lorraine :bounce: :bounce:
  7. the two blue diamonds are now v dark and hiding! i dunno if its something i should be worrying about? what do u guys think? should i do anything or should i just wait? one of the blue diamonds has some marks on his body so i've put some melafix in the tank, hopefully all will be ok. will keep posting
  8. here are the new discus i got from discusguru today!! just popped them into the temporary tank for now, can't wait to shift them to their new tank once i set it up! :bounce: :bounce:
  9. wow i think they've hatched at least i think so the eggs are mostly gone now from the leaf and the daddy blue ram is hovering over the driftwood really protectively. there is this little nook on the wood absolutely covered with hairy green algae (which i'm trying to get rid of!!) and its filled with little grey dots - are those the babies? they look like tiny fish poos   what do i do now?
  10. ooooo they laid again bigger batch of eggs this time still can't see much tho... she laid on top of a very big sword leaf in front of the heater this is too much excitement for me! i hate getting all my hopes up and then having the eggs eaten the day they're suppose to hatch
  11. there's three now in the tank the skinny one is looking heaps better i've been feeding them 3-4 little teeny meals every day and even his colour is changing! he used to be quite a dark brown with v black stripes now his stripes have faded and he's looking almost reddish with his blue pattern coming out nicely! when i look closely i can almost see that he's growing bigger!! might be just wishful thinking tho.
  12. oh he's skinny all over and his eyes are just HUGE they're so scary. there's only two discus at the moment they're from the tank at work and they had three at one stage but that's why i shifted them to my tank at home. will try ur idea of feeding him lots of little meals. i'll be getting him some more friends soon as i can get hold of some here in palmy!! i'm actually waiting for discus guru to come back from holiday hopefully i can get some fish off him!!
  13. hi all i've just brought home 2 x small discus from the tank at work. one of them is sooooo skinny its actually scary!! i've had it for a week and i've been feeding it heaps and heaps!! 2-3x daily but its still skinny. could it have worms or something? or just keep going feeding it?
  14. ack! i came home from work today and all the eggs were gone i guess the parents got hungry
  15. no thank goodness - they are clear-yellow. they laid on the side of the rock facing the back of the tank so its really difficult to get a photo! so the eggs survived the first night! :bounce: :bounce: now what?? how long before they hatch? (IF they hatch!!)
  16. hurray my blue rams have laid again! after the fiasco with the first spawn where the clown loaches ate up all the eggs on the first night, the rams have finally laid again! they're now in a new bigger tank with: 2 x borneo suckers 1 x femal dwarf gourami 2 x baby discus Had 4 x adult tiger barbs with them too but they got shift out pretty quick after i discovered the eggs... wasn't going to take any chances after the first disaster! here's the photo of the eggs + the proud dad on the top right corner - can't figure out how to load up the picture straight onto the forum so i'm afraid the best i can do is a link! :bounce: :bounce: http://tkfiles.storage.msn.com/x1pjdOtV ... 8tL4k9f8RM
  17. wow thanks for all the offers for riccia!! i'm so happy hopefully i'll get some soon (I've pm'd all the appropriate ppl). :bounce: :bounce: i hope my lighting is good enough in my 2nd tank. i just set up a 140L tank with some plants i bought off animates... they had a special deal on buy one get one free few months back and i managed to pick up a couple of swords for 4.95$ which i thought was a bargain!! plus ljtan also gave me some indian ferns and some chains (which aren't growing too well so sad) but the indian fern's taken off (finally!!!) so hopefully before too long i can move my clown loaches in from my other tank. i know they like to tear apart new plants from past experience in my first tank!!
  18. yeah i went to wetpets this week but no luck .. i dunno.. .seems rather expensive for a palmful of plants!!
  19. wow this is unbelievable!! so much for riccia!!! to think that the original stuff sold for only 5$ in the post above!! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 241448.htm
  20. yeah al poor jungin haha crazy thing tho - such a small world crazdevil who gave me some barbs today actually flat with wei ping!! isn't that crazy? six degrees of separation really does exist!! well now they're in the new tank and i did another water change today with 20% water from my old tank into my new tank gouramies doing good so far barbs are busy as they're swimming around exploring man they are HUGE giant barbs!!! hehe well never kept tiger barbs ever so hope everything'll be ok do u know what kind of fish i can keep with them??
  21. hi all, i've just set up my new tank (85 x 45cm tank) yay i do think i'm starting to have MTS my bf thinks i'm nuts we already have one tank up and going in the living room and i'm determined to convert the spare room into a tank room but he's insisting its going to be his gym! we compromised of course hehe he now has all his gym gear stacked up against the wall   anyway washed all my gravel and planted the plants last saturday. i even put the fertiliser under my gravel as plantman suggested hopefully it will help plants grow! brought the tank to temp now 24degrees C. got my 2nd hand fluval 203 filter going (finaly after a few wacks and a sucking on that darn hose and choking on the water), added about 25% of my established tank's water into it. water was cloudy at first now clearing up nicely, almost all clear in fact. added the tank's first 2 occupants yesterday. 2 x dwarf gouramies, was going to put in neons but the gouramies are my least favourite (i know its terrible but favouritism rules!) fishies so in they went. Craz devil has most obligingly offered to give away a few of his barbs so they'll be going in somtimes this week. Haven't done my first water change yet tho, when should i do it and how often? i'm not planning to add any more fish in apart from the barbs which need to be picked up pretty soon. any info would be appreciated since this is the first time i'll be setting my tank up PROPERLY
  22. does anyone know where i can get this plant? i've read lots of lovely things about it and want to try attaching it to my piece of driftwood - animates doesn't sell it tho. :-?
  23. NOw that i've got my filter issues sorted - moving onto the lights. I"m planning to buy a reflector hood that fits 2 x 20W fluro lights. i'm wondering which are the best lights to get? everyone has different opinions. my other jebo tank has 2 x 20W tubes at 10,000K rating. java fern growing great but not much else. my new tank is to be a planted tank - so i want to make sure everything is perfect - should i get a lower K rating, or a higher K rating?
  24. well actually i took everyone's advice i took the whole thing apart and gave everything a good scrub then banged it a few times. checked and rechecked that i connected up the hoses the right way around filled the filter up with water and then turned it on and sucked water through the hoses until all the air bubbles were gone and it worked like a charm  my partner told me it wouldn't work but it did! really showed him!! i'm so happy now saved me money on buying a new filter
  25. it works!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: hurra thanks v much for all ur help i appreciate it. now its time to cycle my tank yay! Lorraine
