  1. Ohh ok, I didnt know that Animates sold big driftwood. Perhaps I should ask the salespeople there. Also, a couple of months back I bought a couple of guppies off TradeMe. Their colours are starting to show, and so far their tails are coloured yellow and the sides of their tails are black. Looking at their parents, it seems the male has a light yellowish body as well. How common is this colouring? Can't seem to find any off Google. Looks pretty though.
  2. I've asked this question before, about ... 8 months ago but I'll need to ask again. I might get a new, bigger tank and want to find a nice piece of driftwood for it. The tank size might be between 60 - 75 cm in length, and 45cm tall and wide. Where's the best place to get a piece of driftwood that size? I would prefer to buy it, but petshops dont sell driftwood pieces that size. Suggestions anyone? Thanks.
  3. Hey there, recently I've been told that certain gasses in my tank in the gravel are bad for fish, and have been told that the Malaysian Trumpet Snail is excellent for removing it. Now, I would like to ask a few questions: 1. How will I be able to control this snail in a tank filled with livebearers? (eg Guppies, Platties, Swordtails. I plan to have a 4f tank just filled to the brim with those 3 livebearers) I heard loaches are a good idea, but how much are they, what can they survive in etc? Any information will be good. 2. How may I acquire some? (Ironically, perhaps I should have brought some with me over to NZ before I moved) 3. I may have some WCMMs inside the tank, due to the snails and other fish in the tank there will probably be no chance of WCMM fry right? Thanks for your time.
  4. It has been nearly a 9 months now since I've set up my tank. Will do a good gravel clean when I do a water change. Should I catch my 4 WCMM and 3 guppies out before I start the gravel vaccuming if the bubbles are poisonus?
  5. This worries me a little, the gravel in my tank are all black, and has some bubbles trapped in it. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
  6. Yes, mine is near a window. Perhaps the females arent ready yet, they look chubby not fat. Maybe I'll toss the guppies some where else. I'll increase the water changes and I'll get back to you all in a month or two. Thanks for the help.
  7. Hi there, I have a 30L tank, with 3F and 1M WCMM in it. It has gravel, Java Moss and a water pump with no filteration and no heater. I do feedings 3 times a day with flake and a 25% water change every month. Anyone knows why my WCMM is refusing to breed? I have had them for over half a year now. Should I get another male maybe if mine is .. not straight? :-? Edit - Forgot to mention I bought a couple of Guppies a few weeks ago.
  8. Sorry to hijack this topic, but anyone think this will provide good lighting for a small'ish tank? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Cycling ... 705771.htm
  9. I have a small tank, with just a box filter and a pump. It is unheated with no light. Are there any floating plants that could survive those conditions? I've already got Java Moss. Thanks.
  10. I was just told that most plants will be fine during winter, however as my tank will not have any lighting I'm not too sure about some of the plants now. Some of the suggested plants: Ricca Indian Fern Anubias Ambrulia However, Ricca is supposedly a heavy light requiring plant, so I dont think it will be suitable. My tank is next to a window, so it should get some light but I reckon it wont be enough. Any thoughts and comments on these selections?
  11. Yeah, I'm about to do the same thing. I got the gravel, driftwood and filteration going, with just one WCMM in it to test if the gravel and driftwood is safe. So far 2 days have passed and the WCMM seems lively but lonely, so I might start planting soon. Any suggestions on plants I could use? I got Java Fern and Java Moss in mind, but are there any others? This will be an unheated tank, and will definetely be cold during winter.
  12. Ahh I see. At 20mm worth of gravel I think I should be ok. I have roughly maybe 30mm+. I'll wait a week and see if my sacrificial WCMM survives the week and then I'll start planting. Thanks for the help guys. Will keep you updated. 8)
  13. My tank is a tad bit smaller than yours, at 500m x 300mm x 300mm. And your tank looks great. Trying to see if I can achieve the same effect with mine. As for the fish trying to bug me if I have food, its only just one fish. If the guy survives a week I'll remove him and start planting.
  14. Ohh ok. My bad then, I must have not read the posts below. Anyways, I forgot I had somemore gravel, so now my tank has around 1 inch of gravel in it. Whens the best time to start planting? I've tossed in a tester WCMM in there to see if it survives, and assuming all goes well I would like to plant ASAP.
  15. Hmm, looking at your picture, I might have a problem. Since I have a small tank, I dont put too much gravel in it. Maybe 1 - 2 cm at most. How would that be? :-?
  16. Can I use gravel as a substrate for plants such as Java Fern and others?
  17. Alright, that settles driftwood then. Any places I could get gravel then?
  18. Just wondering, where can I get gravel and a piece of driftwood around Christchurch? I know places where I could buy them, but I'm thinking of getting some by myself (i.e. from nature). Any suggestions?
  19. Yep, it does get rain in it. Maybe I should be more patient. Will report back in a month lol.
  20. Bah, nothing. Maybe I should wait a few more weeks? :-? I was really looking forward to getting some fry ..
  21. Ahh ok. I'll try to shine a torch in there later. Will report any news.
  22. Thing is, the male has been chasing the female around for a few days now. The female just seems to flick him off. Perhaps my fish are just like me ... heh. Anyways, I dont see any fry or eggs yet. WCMMs dont eat their young right?
  23. Hi there, around 3-4 weeks ago I bought 4 WCMMs (1M and 3F ... lucky fella). I've left them outside in a small container (around 60x30x30) with some Java Moss, Oxygen Weed and some rocks. I've fed them on and off for the first 2 weeks to get them used to the tank, and now they are more responsive (coming out to eat 5 mins after I "dissappear", I can see them because the container is next to a tinted window). Now the question is, how long do I have to wait before the females mature? I'm pretty sure my male is ready (hes HUGE compared to the others, and always chases the females around), but the females just seem to swim away from him everytime he chases. The male is around 3.5 cm, where else the females are around 2.5 cm. How long more do I have to wait?
