Here's a pic of the egg tumbler I managed to put together. Its made from 20mm plastic pipe and some tubing. Most of the eggs have now hatched into little wrigglers.

Well I managed to strip 5 females who were holding eggs yesterday - so I have about 50 odd eggs to tumble. I left them in a small net with an air stone underneath last night. Found a number of them had gone white this morning. Not sure if they are just infertile or because there isn't enough air circulation. So thats why I am having a go at making an egg tumbler.

I have eggs sitting in a net with an air stone underneath. I have too many eggs and they are all bunching up - don't think they are getting enough circulation. Anyway, I'm having a go at a DIY tumbler, will post pics when completed.

Does anyone know if any pet shops sell egg tumblers? I've found some DIY tumblers online but was just wondering if its easier to just purchase one.

hey Ryan, Sorry to hear about your breeding colony of dems. What was your m/f ratio by the way? You don't have to wait too long to establish your colony again - the baby dems grow up pretty quickly! At the moment, I have around 20 dems, 20 yellows, group of baenschi, group of electras, couple of giraffes and 3 cynotilapias. I had this crazy idea of going mass dems and maybe stick in 50-100 of them! I was also looking at a group of tropheus. Thanks for the comments. The fish are no longer in the 3 foot tank. They were moved to a 4 foot and will now be moving to a new 6 foot that I am currently setting up. Will post pics when the move is complete. The coloured fry are about 4 weeks old since stripping (they were wrigglers when I stripped them). They are just over 1cm in total length.

This thread carries on from a thread I started earlier on this year about my first african tank. The fish have all started breeding now and here are a few pics of the breeding demasoni. There are around 20 odd demasonis in the colony. There's a listing for "Equator" at 5.30pm this saturday and 2.30pm this sunday. It doesn't state what episode it is though.

hey Cam, I used a spawning mop to breed my pandas a few months back and it worked very well. Panda cories are a little different from the bronze or peppered cories in that they don't lay very many eggs each time. Instead of laying a hundred or so (small eggs) on the glass, each female tends to lay about 10 (relatively bigger eggs) which they hide inside the mop. A natural alternative to the mops is to use live plants but thats more hassle than its worth. I found the exciting part in breeding the pandas was looking through the mop to see how many eggs you could find! And here is a fantastic step-by-step guide to making a spawning mop. Make sure you purchase the acrylic (synthetic) knitting wool as real wool will rot over time. I got mine from spotlight.

Went back to my local countdown in Mt Wellington today and asked where the epsom salt was kept. The helpful lady led me on a tour of the supermarket before one of the other ladies pointed out that it was in the soap section :-? I had a read of the label and it says you can add it to your bath - maybe thats why its in the soap section? It also mentions that you could add it to magnesium-deficient soil - so it could be placed in the gardening section too? The obvious place to put it (for me anyway) would be with the other cooking salts (thats the first place I looked ) - but maybe you can't eat epsom salt? Anyway, I got what I was after. I want to have a go at making the rift lake buffer for my malawi tank and had a quick look for epsom salt at the supermarket the other day. I found the iodised salt, rock salt etc but not epsom salt. Any ideas on where I could find it?

I'm no chemist but did a couple of searches and found the following: The chemical reaction for chlorine bleach is: Cl2(aq) + H2O(l) <==> 2H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) + ClO-(aq) This is an equilibrium reaction and the addition of any acid will shift it the reaction to the left and form chlorine at the expense of ClO- (the bleaching agent) thus neurtralising it. Only problem is, chlorine gas can be poisonous. I have asked at the vets in my local area (Mt Wgn) but none of them have droncit. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on some droncit in the Auckland area? I'm planning to use it as a de-wormer to treat internal parasites. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about the loss. I don't need to worry about not replugging the heaters as I just leave then plugged in during my water changes. The heaters lie in the bottom half of the tank so as long as the water change is no more than 50%, the heater remains submerged.
