  1. hi guys, just wondering where I can get these items if I am planning to ship or transport some fish?
  2. I am not familiar with the Brooklands peat. I am still not sure about which one to get.. the peat moss used for growing plants or the peat that look like bits of bark? What kind of peat do the discus breeders out there use to condition their water?
  3. hey fishboi, thanks for the info. What does the peat look like? I am guessing it is a fluffy type of material if you are also using it for spawning killies?
  4. The Hauraki gold peat moss.. yes, I have seen them at the garden centres. They come in 50L and 100L bags. There was a recent thread about somebody purchasing this peat moss but I think it turned out to be the wrong one.
  5. Is the peat used for conditioning water to make it softer and more acidic the same as the peat used for breeding killies? I am wanting to buy peat to condition my water, but have come across a couple of different types of peat. 1. Fluffy/stringy type used as a medium for growing plants. 2. One that looks a bit like bark and is said to be used for soil conditioning. Which one should I get? Recommendations on where and what brand/type to get would be greatly appreciated.
  6. I hav 3 red irians (i think thats why they are called.. they look abit like a salmon), 1 bosemani and 2 blue lacustris. Very cool energetic fish!
  7. Nice pic there of the youngersters! Could you post a pic of the parents? I'm guessing that one of them is a cambodian red?

    White worms

Mites aye... really annoying things they are! I find that the mites tend to build up if there is left over food. So you want your worms to eat all the food preferably in 3 days or less. Sometimes when the soil surface becomes too dry, the worms won't come up to eat and the left over food go to the mites! So I find that if I add a bit of water to the cultures every now and then, the worms are always feeding and no mites accumlate!
  9. I've had a case where I kept the female in a breeding trap while the male in the tank was working away building a nest. I could see the female was plump and full of eggs but wasn't sure when to release her. After a few days, she started just dropping her eggs and devouring them as they dropped. At that point, I quickly released her and the breeding process went along as expected. So I guess, when the female is egg-laden but cannot breed, she will drop her eggs anyway. And since they are so nutritious, its better to eat them than to let them rot away
  10. Can you keep WCMMs outside during winter? If so, will they spawn when its that cold?
  11. I have not noticed any seeds on the flowering stalks. I have to wait till the roots develop before i plan to do anything with the small plants. They were left outside in the bucket when our 4 foot tank cracked. Its been outside in the bucket for over a year now.

    Cories

Can u use any sand from the beach or does it need to be a special type that you have to purchase?
  13. Ok cool.. thanx blueandkim! I'll bend the stalk into another bucket of water and hopefully it will develop some roots.
  14. hey, nice unusual fish you got there. This maybe a silly question, but seeing as he is called a 'puffer' fish.. does he actually "puff" up??
  15. so if i want it to develop some roots, i need to submerge all the little plants on the stalk?
  16. This is my new guy.. a cool looking Crown tail! I got him a couple of days ago. Its hard to get a good shot of him flaring.. this ones the best i got so far.
  17. ok, i don't think dotPhoto allows direct linking so I've used a different host. Photos should show up now.. fingers crossed..
  18. I have an amazon sword (can someone help me identify it?) that I have left in a bucket outside for a year or so now and over the summer, it has grown a stalk of flowers and small plants are appearing on it. Do i have to wait till i see roots coming out before I can remove the baby plant? Does the baby plant need to be submerged for roots to develop? Here is a pic of the plant in a bucket. And here are a couple of close ups of the baby plants.
  19. I am glad to announce that the white spot is gone and all the clown loaches are back in top condition. Thank you all for your advice.
  20. Thanks for the replies guys. I did the first dose on saturday, so will wait till monday night to do another one. I have used the recommended dosage (2 drops per litre) in the first dose.. and they seem to be fine, eating as usual. I checked today and there are more white spots appearing on the loaches. I'll halve the dosage anyway in case it might do more harm than good. Fingers cross that the 2nd and possibly 3rd doses will do the trick.
  21. hi, I have a bunch of clown loaches who have the white spot disease. I'm currently treating them with the blue circle white spot cure.. which appears to be methylene blue. After I have administered the required dosage, the water goes a blue colour then it clears up the next day. Does this mean the medication is gone? Or is the water suppose to stay blue for 3 days? I have a few plants in the tank and no carbon in the filter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
  22. cool.. thanks for the suggestions.
  23. any beaches in particular?
  24. Can i have a few good suggestions about where I can get some nice pieces of driftwood in auckland? Cheers.
  25. They are a hybrid bred in Asia but no hard info. has been released about what was crossed. But i'm sure there was a severum in there somewhere. And yes they are infertile. I had a few at one time and their eggs never hatched. They behave like your usual cichlids.. fairly aggressive and territorial. I've read that they have released parrot fish that have been artificially dyed so that you get green ones and purple ones etc.. very distasteful!
