    kribs

I was just looking for confirmation that I was sold a male and a female. The lady in the shop was not convincing at all,I think it is right but I will feel better about my purchase if I get it from someone here. Greg

    Chnging sex

I have 3 swords and 3 mollies,of each I have 1 male and 2 female.1 each of the females(1 sword,1 molly)seem to be changing a little ,do they change sex? I ask this because the sword that is looking different has not had young yet and its mate has. They are from the same hatch.(What is the right word here, livebearers born same time?) Greg
  4. What did you mean by this Alan?
  5. Do you think if I collect them andput them in a container with clean water for a few days it might clean them out.Sort of like purging??? I do understand where you are coming from with the dirty water though. Greg
  6. If I was to collect mossie larva from a local stormwater drain to feed my fish would it be advisable to clean them somehow before feeding or just stay away altogether?? Greg
  7. Just wondering about the size of the filter, the tank is 50cm aprox 30 litres, there are two sizes of filter I'm looking at,8cm across or 13cm across. Is bigger better or is it just taking up valuable room in the tank?? Greg
  8. Thank guys, you've been most helpful.I'll get on the job. Greg
  9. Use water from the main tank or will that make no difference because the filter has already been seeded after being in the main tank? Greg
  10. Snowman, you buy them as 2 separate units don't you? Only really need the two items to get started? What needs to be done in the way of cycling with this sort of set up? Greg
  11. I have aquired a 25-30 litre 20 inch tank and thought I might set it up as a hospital tank(or fry). Am looking at a 50 watt heater, and am unsure whether to go for an internal filter or an air pump and just airate the water. Please let me know of any other necessities. Any advice appreciated Greg
  12. All the fish seem happy enough, except the silver shark I lost today, but it too looked thin and I have only had them in the tank 4 days. I think the dwarf and that shark may have come in with something or just stressed or something along those lines because the other fish came in from the same shop on the same day and they are fine.(dwarfs first then sharks 2 weeks later). The lfs today said my tank was to clean was my problem, doing a small water change 10-15 % weekly, they reccomended 30% monthly??? Can't find peat, without fertilizer, in my area, tried ebay no good either, not in the lfs. May just leave the pH as is.Don't really want to do chemicals, but the shops use them as the water supply is the same at my house as the shops. Can't do to much damage if I decide to go that way can it? Greg
  13. Can't find females in the area,Not pretty enough for the shops.(apparently) All tests are good,pH is 7.8 can't get it down even with rain water.Been doing changes for 3 weeks with rain water, the gravel has some shell in it keeping it up there. The other fish in the tank are 3 mollies,3 swords,3 sucker cats,2 kribs and 3 silver sharks. the biggest fish is the male krib, probably 9 cm Greg
  14. Two weeks on and the blue has died today. He lost his colour over the last week, got really thin and shy and was getting bullied a little. Was eating bloodworm thuogh and keeping it down. So apart from being thin and colourless there were no other real symtoms. Also my son lost a comet today, same thing it looked like.Thin and lost a few scales.(different tanks) Any ideas for future reference would be appreciated. Greg
  15. Thanks again Warren.I will look seriously at that. Looks nice enough as a plant but there are better looking plants out there. I was in the lfs this arvo and it didn't have hornwart but he was very interested when I said I had some,he did on the other hand have the Val.
  16. Thanks warren. They are for sale so must be ok.
  17. Found some similar to the remaining 2 plants,do these names sound or look familiar to anyone, Bacopa caroliniana for the plant on the left and Eleocharis acicularis for the needle like plant. Thanks again for all your help.
  18. Yes it would appear that it is hornwort and it is for sale in the shops and the net here in Aus so must be legal. The other one is Vallisneria gigantea, was very purple in the sun. Still looking for the needle like plant on the right, and the little broad leaf one on the left.I'm sure I have seen the broadleaf one in the shops.
  19. Thanks for the input,I'll have to check the regulations. Plants aren't that dear to buy I just thought it would be a bit more interesting if I had collected them myself. The ribbon looking one under the red rock looks like ones in the lfs,so I thought save on plants spend on fish, easy. Same with the one to the left of the grey rock, bit hard to see in the pic.
  20. This is a photo of some plants from my local creek, can anyone identify them and let me know if they are fish friendly? I am searching for them on the net but in case i can't identify any your help would be appreciated. Thaks Greg
  21. Great stuff Heather, they sound like a good fish to keep. I think I will have to get them as well as some Kribinses. Greg
  22. 1 male 1 female for the kribs, got it, thanks The bolivian ram also looks good, will study up on them too.
  23. I was in the lfs on the weekend and saw these and it said they were a good community fish. Was just keen to see if anyone is keeping them in a community tank and if so how do they go? Was going to get some Kribensis but the lfs said she had a pair and the male killed the female,so not sure now Maybe more females,2-1 perhaps for the krib and the butterfly perhaps. Greg
