I got one from that deepbluesea guy.

And I wish I had taken a photo yesterday and then today.

The corals loved it... up they opened.

I guess I should have changed it earlier not after 12 months

I'll tell you in a couple of days how much more they open up.

Could be a sign of stress. Corals extend their polyps for a number of different reasons, not necessarily because they are happy.

I'd thought as far as light goes they tend to extend their polyps more as a response to low light and less when the light is high?

They could be increasing surface area to get rid of increased O2 from increased zooxanthellae activity.

Really there is no way for sure to know why a coral has it's polyps extended, just by looking at it.

because unhappy corals don't seem to open up.

like my leather in a SPS tank he just doesn't like it.

Lps don't open when the current is to strong they don't really like it!

leathers don't open if there isn't enough current or just melt away if its really bad!

How do you know a coral is not "hyperventilating", or feeding, or trying to purge waste etc when it's polyps are extended?

It could be doing any of those things and may or may not be a "happy" time for the coral.

That's all.

So maybe by upgrading the lighting, the coral was hyperventilating due to increased zoox activity? Or maybe it was happy.

Polyp extension is not necessarily a sign the coral is "happy". Nor is it a sign the coral is "unhappy".

never said it was a hard core rule layton, they're generalising. there are other factors of course, but in general, if its open, its happy.

maybe by upgrading the lighting, the coral was hyperventilating due to increased zoox activity?

perhaps it was, but then if it was, increase zoox is a good thing.

but in general, if its open, its happy.

The only way you can say that is if you know why the polyps are extended in the first place.

If you can't tell why polyps are extended, there is no way you can even generalise to say that the polyp extension is generally related to "happiness".

why don't you ask the coral? i am sure it will tell if you ask nicely. :D

*yawn*

agree.

look at me, my arms are open and im happy! oh wait, i've folded my arms, angry again...

why is there no "really sarcastic" face to choose?

look at me, my arms are open and im happy! oh wait, i've folded my arms, angry again...

ROTFL! Actually that's a pretty good explanation

the coral was hyperventilating due to increased zoox activity?

The coral isn't the only one hyperventilating

a politician in the making! no not you james

damn, i was hoping to run for prime minister :D at least Id make it fair for EVERY nzl'er and not just the lazy ones :-?

i'd kick helens butt :D

lets re-phrase this one then...

yes, polyp extension could be a good or bad thing. eg: if there were sudden changes in tank parameters, could lead to 'supercharged' zooxanthellae resulting in explusion/bleaching. Im guessing if your tank temperature was high too high this could lead to constant respiration? If you dont have enough spacing between corals it may lead to predation. If your corals are horny :D well you can work out the rest. they all cause polyp extension.

Other than the above, they might just be having a feed. generalising again, feeding = growth, growth = happy corals :D (but then too fast coral growth could be a bad thing!)
