Blueram
Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me with the following query. Has anybody transported live fish on a commerical flight within NZ, e.g. Air NZ or Qantas out of either Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch? I would have thought that you would need to hand carry them, but what about airport secuirty baggage screening? I'm sure X-raying the fish can't be good for them!! Any help will be appreciated. cuviceps
Yeah, we carried fish on a plane from Nelson to Hamilton. Not a problem, went on as hand luggage & we dutifully held onto them. Just ring your airline and check on what is classed as hand luggage and weight details. Obviously as hand luggage it needs to be stowed away from foot traffic, eg small chilli bin under seat or on your lap. I am sure if they need to see items in question they will be OK with it. This was about 2 years ago now. Cheers Damon
Matthew
i'm sure if you explain that you have fish, and that you are willing to show the customs people they won't need to put them through the x-ray machine. best bet would be to call ahead
Bruce
Hi, I have done this heaps of times, they alwas want to have a look though, more out of curiosity than anything else :-) /Bruce
Pies
I have tranported fish several times with both Quantas and Air NZ, as both carry on and stored. No problems what-so-ever. As stowed freight, they have been cery helpful, and covered it with LIVE FISH, FRAGILE stickers etc. I have a preference to stow my fish rather than have them in carry on. Never had a loss. Good luck and don't worry about it
Blueram
Thanks for the replies guys. Pies, Have the security staff wanted to X-ray the fish?? This can't be that good form them?? Thanks Blueram
Caryl
I have travelled with fish and axolotls and never had anyone want to x-ray them. Just tell them what you have and they will be very helpful I am sure.
Ira
I wouldn't imagine that just a quick X-ray would be particularly bad for them. You probably get a heavier radiation dose from your monitor posting on the MB each day than from getting a broken bone X-rayed. But, that being said, no point putting the fish through the x-ray if you can avoid it.
Pies
I am flying to Auckland and back here at least once a week at the moment, and yes, they will XRAY your fish... My Bangi Cardinals seem no worse for wear though... I am confident that stowing them is better, far less being knocked around. They will NOT (trust me) let you hold onto the Chilly bin during takeoff and landing. Pies
