Loopy
I would like to see how many people would be interested in getting together for an evening of *fishy* talk and possibly discuss starting up a new club. Pm me if you are interested or have any suggestions and we can all put our heads together and work out a time and place etc to meet up.
AMAZONIAN
Hi Loopy I wouldnt get too enthusiastic about considering forming a New /Another Club in Christchurch. I have seen clubs fall over over the years for more reasons than I care to remember. One reason is the LACK of ENTHUSIASM by the current Membership. Please don't try to re-invent the wheel. I am going through the marsh up to my chin at present trying to get a club started in Nelson, where I was a member of a club with a financial Membership of 80. It folded through the factions that were formed in that club, splitting it in two. Neither club now exists. Sort out why your club is "Sick" and work on ways to fix it. I know a little of the background of CA and PS and I dont want to see it collapse without trying to fix it first. GOOD LUCK, you have a lot of hard work to do Sharon. PM me, I'm on CHCH next week to go to hospital.
sharn
is there already a club in chch? if not then i dont see why its a problem!! tga used to have a club, it went under years ago and with the help of others we recently set up a new one. you dont need 50 members to have a club, even 3 is ok! i think we have 12 financial members of our club. its not a hassle at all starting up a club, i did alot of the groundwork for ours and once you have interest, posters up to try and grab more attention and members you organise the first meeting, discuss with the other people what they would like to have in a club and away you go! caryl was a large help in setting up the club (thanks caryl!!). its not a major affiliating with the FNZAS, and it wouldnt be a major un-affiliating id imagine. you dont even have to affiliate anyway so it could just stay a free club. its not supposed to be a high tech, govt like thing with lots of fine print and hassles, its supposed to stay fun and easy! dave
Loopy it is really encourging to see you are trying to generate a bit more enthusiam down there in Christchurch. I know from my recent vist down there that there is a couple of very keen hobbyist down there. I am sorry but i must ask why are you trying to start a new club instead of promoting the exsiting canterbury club which is already aflilated with the FNZAS etc. I would like to think that would work thought advertising via pet shops, newspapers and most deafeniely the website which we all so much enjoy . Let it be known the current meeting venue and time etc then if this doesn't suit discus what would be better. Canterbury has so much potential . Anyway i hope the club goes well and if you need any advice feel free to PM myself and i am sure there are alot of FNZAS members that would be happy to help Dave President of the Waikato Aquarium Socitey
Alan
I agree with the above, try to work with what is already there as that club does have aged foundations. If you're not sure of where to get local contacts find the "Officers of Clubs on the Home page, right hand side. Click on the FNZAS at top left to get to the page. Sharn, just wondering if the EBoP club has paid it's affiliations yet as they have to be in "yesterday" for Caryl to get the Yearbook out in time. Please make enquiries into this el rapido. This goes for other clubs as well. Alan
Caryl
Loopy has her reasons for doing this (which I won't go into here but they are valid). I see no reason why Christchurch can't have more than one club afterall, they have the most pet shops per capita in the country!
Loopy
Not sure where to start!! Couple of points off the top of my head... 1- C.A.P.S has got a terrible reputation because of political club rubbish that happened YEARS ago. 2- I know of a few people who would be supportive of a new club but don't want to have anything to do with C.A.P.S. these people would be very valuable members (knowledgeable etc). 3- Sometimes things just can not be fixed . But i will still try, i am not going to give up on C.A.P.S yet. Christchurch is big enough. We might be able to have two clubs comfortably running!! I posted this as a reply to someone else in another forum... The Canterbury Aquarium and Pond Society. But due to technical rubbish and a lot of issues that occured many, many years ago, C.A.P.S has a *very* bad reputation. I am a member of C.A.P.S. One of a pityful handful of members. The reputation is letting the club down. Many fish people will not join because of the reputation. And the reputation is stopping a lot of people from joining. I have been advised to start a new club and let the old club do it's thing. We would love to just get everyone who is really enthusiastic and passionate about their fish together and have fun and learn at the same time. dave
Loopy that is very sad to hear your above comments. Do you realisitly thing that what has been done in the past is going to impact on any potential that the exsiting club has. Can't understand why people can get so pity after all we are only hobbyist trying the best we can to promote our hobby. Please remeber that what makes a club is its most important asset its members surely the group of ethustatic fishkeepers can make change happen. Or are you going to wait untill the waters of the past have all dried up and people forget that there was even a caterbury aquarium socitey  . At the end of the day whatver has been done is not going to go away but it is up to the members new and old to make change happen I would love to be down there it sounds like it would be quite challenging to get the Canterbury club running as it should
Caryl
You have to be there and experience what has gone on to fully appreciate why this step has been taken Dave. The term "flogging a dead horse" springs to my mind
Loopy
Lol Caryl! Do you realisitly thing that what has been done in the past is going to impact on any potential that the exsiting club has I have already seen proof that what has happened in the past has, is, and will affect the club. I am not too clear on what the history is but i know people who do not want to have anything to do with the club because of what happened in the past. We have about a dozen members. We are lucky if 4 of those members turn up each month to our meetings (me included). One of the other 3 members is keen to reviving the club but their busy life means that it is not a priority. I am a stay at home mum. I have lots of different means of getting in contact with people and visa versa. And i need something to do with my time The other 2 members have been members for a number of years and just seem to be broken spirited. (There in fishy body but not in fishy mind )) They are reliable enough to come to the meetings but that is about it. They just don't have the passion anymore. In regards to the existing club. I think i will slowly try to introduce structure to our meetings and small and steady improvements before i attempt to recruit new members.
