Aqua
Heh, here's a math question for you math-minded people out there! I've got an irregular hexagonal tank with the following dimensions: 24" along the back, 10" along the straight side, 6" along the slanted side, and 15" along the front. It's 19" high. SO: What's the litreage? (Please show your working hehe)
ryanjury
So is it a beveled edge tank (sometimes called bay window tanks) with just the front 2 edges cut off?
Aqua
*blink* umm. It's a rectangle with a trapezoid on the front
ryanjury
Oh yeah I think I know what you mean.. Just thought a hexagon had to have 6 sides... If its what I think your talking about it which i drew a quick pic of its volume would be: Just break it up into rectangles and triangles to get the area of the bottom and times it by the height.. If it looks like what I think I get 120.26 litres without taking any out for gravel etc and not taking into the fact you dont fill it right up.. does it look like this? (sorry crap paint pic)
fishboi
i'll need the length from back to front and then i'll show u. its going to be around 100 litres
Aqua
yeah it looks like that. There's no way it's only 47 litres though!
Aqua
length from back to front (the front corner of the front pane & the slanted panes) is 14.5"
ryanjury
Yeah check the edit i fixed it up  got my inches and cm mucked up..
ryanjury
you can just find the total length front to back.. are you sure its 14.5" using your first measurements (triangle with sides of 4.5" and 6" remaining side is 7.5) I calculate front to back as 17.5"
Aqua
yup I'm sure
fishboi
94.04 litres if filled to the top with no gravel
fishboi
first u work out the volume if the tank is an ordinary shape with the total length of the tank [front to back] then take away the volume of the corners by working out its volume if they were a small rectangle shape by putting them together. then walla here is the basic idea [all done in cm] back length X total length front to back x height \ 1000 = total volume back length - front length = length of triangle front total length front to back - side length = length of triangle side now two triangle of the same size makes a rectangle or square. so.... length of triangle side x length of triangle front x height = volume of both triangle total volume - volume of both triangle = volume of actual tank i know their is a more simple way but the answer will be the same. Alan
The two triangles cancel out one another. The main tank part is 74.664 lts., .610 x .255 x .480 x 1000 = 74.664 the front section is 43.608 lts., .495 x .480 x .105 x 1000 = 24.948 Total = 99.612 Total is 100lts. rounded off. Alan 104 Woops just fixed it with an edit. Al
ryanjury
lol looks like we've got a bit of a vote going on here... Come on everyone else give us your calculations, is the tank empty at the moment? lol maybe you can bucket water in just to be sure?
