wasp
A few weeks ago somebody posted a heckuva good bunch of info about the use of vinegar with kalkawasser, but I can't find it. Who was it? And where is the post?

Sharkey
And I have been doing it this way for a little while. And the cost of adding suppliments has dropped. Best thing ive done in a while
wasp
Well now what I want to know is what is a good pump, I want to drip it in, but don't want to spend $400.00 + on a dosing pump. Anybody think of any other options?
Ira
I've been thinking of trying something T'd off my return pump. You'd only need a tiny bit of flow.
kevan
I use a 20litre container with a tap from pay less plastics I can adjust the drip rate to very low . tryed with a smaller container but drip rate is too varied and stops if you try to turn right down. suphew
I have the same pump, prob from the same dude :-) works really well, never had a problem with it. I think it does about 9lph, I have it on a timer so it does 5-6 15min runs through the night

jetskisteve
to clarify my rock tank uses the drip from cotainer method the Reef has a dosing pump that doses from a 100L barrel laced with kalk & acetic acid
suphew
laced with kalk & acetic acid Can you do this?? do you just work out the dosing and chuck it in?? I have only been adding acetic acid for a couple of days and am already sick of having to do it eachh day.
jetskisteve
Can you do this?? do you just work out the dosing and chuck it in?? Well ido I just add some kalk about once a month with a splash of vinagar, no science involved for me. maybe Layton could tell me if I'm doing it wrong?/ Pretty sure i read it somewhere? suphew
Sorry I misread, thought you said amino acids, not acetic acid, doh.... But does raise a good point, could I mix amino acids in with my kalk and dose that way?? Would save a ton of stuffing round. Also I did the calculation on that site for how much vinagar to add and it worked out at about 1.5liters a week for my topup! Wasn't that keen on dump that much vinagar in my tank each week. I'm not sure, but I suspect the extremely high PH could degrade the amino acids.
lduncan
Interesting question. At first glance I would have thought it would be fine. While in the kalk solution, the acid would shift from a zwitterion (simultaneously positive and negative) to a fully negative ion. But then that equilibrium would return to "normal" once introduced to the tank and pH stabilises to tank levels. There is no irreversible reaction I can think of between calcium hydroxide and amino acids in general (which would not otherwise happen when added to the tank).
