Aquarium Dude
I am looking to filter a 250 litre and was going to go with a 2215 but was looking at the flow rates. Though the 2215 is rated for 350l the flow rate is low compared to the equivilently rated fluval. Are the eheim tank ratings reliable or should I go with 2217? sharn
i have no idea on flow rates but i always look at how much it turns over, not the 'for aquariums up to bla bla' as thats just a guide for newbies. you have to take into account the fish and how messy they are etc. for a 250L with average fish and stocking i would go for a 1200lph. have to take into account most filters are rated before media therefore after a 1200lph probably does more around the 1000lph, i know some filters actually come with the ratings on them after the media is added but im not sure which brands. good luck picking your filter! the fluval and eheims are both good filters
ryanjury
Yeah agreed with sharn, the general rule is to buy the biggest you can afford (the most flow rate). Beware that cheaper ones that tend to quote flow rates just dont seem to perform as well as the better brands (IMO based on a comparison between an eheim and an aqua one).. Maybe as sharn suggested more expensive ones quote it with media in and cheaper ones quote without media to make them sound better.... Who knows! Aquarium Dude
so as opposed to the 2215 (620lph) I should look at the 2217 (1000lph)
Freakyfish
With the majority of canisters including Eheim and Fluval they are quoted on flow rates with no media and no head height But with the higher end canister the flow rate isnt as important as some of the cheaper brands The flow rates on the Pro3 Eheim is 1900lph thought this drops to around 1200 full of media and this is rated to a 1200 litre tank and i know people using it 1000litre tanks with no problems If your going to go the Fluval i would reccomend the 405 Eheim you have a few to choose from depending on your budget With some of the others i wouldnt drop below 1200lph on them Brad
Jo1
I think the 2215 would be fine. I have had one on a 200 litre for years with no problems and have been operating one on a 300 litre gold fish aquarium for a couple of years. Also have a 2217 on a 500 litre and a 600 litre that are great too. Prefer the classics to the professionals but both are fine. You will get at least 20 years out of these filters - infact we have one that is now 24 years old and still going really well although we can no longer get parts for it.
