shoes
Hi there We've had our tank for 31/2 weeks (and 4 hours!! ha ha) and this is the first time I've joined any forum, so my lingo may not be forumish!! I have been looking at this site since we got our tank and have learned quite a bit!! Thanks for that We love our new hobbie and have a 160l community tank with 10 neon tetras, 3 platies (one I think is pregnant, I haven't managed to find the gestation period for these, just that they can "store" sperm) and 1 bronze catfish. We hope to get some more soon!! However...one of our neon's is swimming about head down and looks a little swollen....after reading just about every forum on sick neon's I have noticed it has a white pimple just below its lip...yikes TB I'm thinking, so we are trying to get it OUT of the tank!!! We have been trying on and off for over an hour (We have a net)!! Can we do it? No!!!! We (well, I) am also getting worried that we might be unduly stressing the other fish...So, after this long winded explanation....does anyone out there have a surefire way of catching the fish??? Thanks so much to anyone who has some advice!!
sharn
tried two nets? i had to use four nets and two people to get my rummies out of one of my tanks  what does his scales look like? could be dropsy? they often get bloated and cant swim properly. shoes
Cheers for that, a mission indeed!...we thinking we give it a rest now and go and buy another net or two 2moro and hopefully the whole tank wont be dead when we wakeup!!
suphew
Sometime it depends on the fish, try moving the net slowly so you don't scare the fish, they are used to things moving in there water but fast things look like something about to eat them. If you get another net buy a big one, just sit it in the tank and chase the fish into it with the other net. If all else fails the sure fire way is to remove half or more of the water. Are you sure you have ID'd the problem? It's possible it might have just been damaged in a fight, I'm not an expert on Neons but if you post in the correct section someome will be able to tell you what you need to do. Caper
Hi Hmmm...wish I could help but haven't come across what you have explained, YET Is there just the one "pimple"? I'm sure in your reading you've come across the icky "Ick" *how duh* :-? , so just wondering if there's a possibilty its that??? You get lots of help here...people always eager to help! Take care & have fun with your new hobby, Caper
Caryl
Calm down shoes. One white spot on the lip does not indicate TB. Your tank is still cycling and neons are not the hardiest fish to do this with. Female neons sometimes look a little swollen when they are carrying a lot of eggs. What has been your tank maintenance routine so far?
shoes
I'm calm again!!! Thanks for your advice...you guys are real helpful, I think it's great! Well, I'm glad that we didn't get him out of the tank last night, coz this morning the little guy is back swimming normally.....still got a swollen belly tho, so maybe it/she is carrying eggs!! We had the tank for 8 days before we put fish in...our LFS said this ok...but on further reading possibly not  ....we have got a Fluval 240 filter which seems pretty good....and we have done 25% water changes every 7 days and added Stress Zyme and Stress Coat and have been hoping that the we don't kill the little critters coz the tank prolly hasn't cycled yet....so yeah! Our LFS said not to worry to much about testing the water as you can get too carried away with creating "perfect conditions"...maybe this is not the best advice?? We want to get the little catfish a couple of buddies as I've read they shouldn't be by themselves, but am wondering if it is wise to get them now, or wait a few more weeks to be sure the tank is cycled/settled....anyway thanks again
Caper
I'm glad your calm...I've been told more than once here to calm down, I sorta, kinda, DO have a tendency to panic    still got a swollen belly tho, so maybe it/she is carrying eggs Could be, the first time I noticed one of my neons with a fat tummy, PANIC   , thought dropsy , posted some pics here and discovered the egg carrying thingy. An oh, aren't they just little buggers when your trying to catch them
Caryl
I would be suspect about the advice the lfs is giving you! The tank is definitely still cycling then. Do you have some test kits? At this stage it helps to know your ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels as these will change as the tank cycles. If you get a reading that shows toxic levels, you are able to do an immediate water change to fix the problem and so help the fish. Fish do not need "perfect" conditions but they do need the best you can give them. Their lives depend on you. Do not get any more fish yet until testing shows your ammonia and nitrites are 0. Have a look here as I find this site excellent. http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/bcycling.htm More details http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/cycling2.htm
sharn
also definatly look into dropsy, that often causes swelling but the most tell tale sign is scales sticking out- sort of like a pinecone  good luck with your new tank and im happy you found us- LFS dont have the most squeaky clean reputation when it comes to good advice :-?
