Hats off please - royalty in the house

Very nice, I have one the same size and it has similar "whisker" growth near the gills and strong odontal growth on the pectoral ray. I'm calling that one a boy but there's no way to be 100% sure until they're all grown up. My 16cm one has less growth on the whiskers and pecs and I'm figuring that one's a girl. Will soon be getting an adult male (28+cm) and I'll put up a piccie of him when he gets in. Here's a pic of my two a few months back when they were still getting to know each other ;)

Thanks for the comments :)

We got him/her at Organism about 6 or 7 months ago - he's still the most we've spent on a fish - $140.

The guys at Organism have such nice fish, and they're really helpful too.

Breeding has only been reported once in captivity. Details are that they were adults and were in a 125 gallon tank alone with lots of driftwood and a large cave. I don't know many people that have a 500L breeding tank handy.... or 2x 10+ year old fish to work with. Seems as big of a mission as breeding aros or clown loaches. Easier to import from country of origin (or breeders).

16cm is about 3 years old according to the previous owner (I've had it for 6 months - was 15cm when I got it). Came from a 8ft tank of rather large fish including two large royal knives. The big 28cm one is wild caught so not sure about the age.

If it helps there was one in Hollywood fish farm today, was tempted to buy it but thought it might be better going to someone who had another to pair etc, and my tank isn't completely ready, it was $110. Hope this helps someone

The big one chases the smaller one around and is generally queen of the tank. Takes on anything that gets in its way, even a shoal of big clown loaches. They're amazing fish and I hope the new big fella settles in well. The 11cm one will be finding other accomodations to keep it from getting pummeled.

Here's some pics of the 16cm Royal. Some decent close ups. She got cheeky when I flashed her with the camera (taking pics of the clown loaches for sale) and checked me out so it was easy to get close shots - if she held still enough.

So here's what you have to look forward to when you have a medium sized Royal. Not the white band on the caudal fin has grown out.

I tried taking pictures of the odontal growth on the pec fins and the "whiskers" near the gill and eye. On males this is much more pronounced and my 11cm Royal already has spikes nearly this large and he's smaller than her.

Will get some pics of the big boy when/if he gets here.

Wow, I cant wait till ours is that size Blue - she is a great fish - great to see they keep being friendly, ours has just started displaying on the driftwood, not scurrying off whenever we come near.
