KP
I'm scouting for a quiet performance based skimmer for a 400L tank and will be in a cabinet with sump. After a bit of research I have narrowed it down to either the  Tunze 9010 http://www.tunze.com/149.html?&L=1&C=NZ&user_tunzeprod_pi1[predid]=-infoxunter028 or  Deltec AP600 http://www.deltecusa.us/proteinskimmers/ap701.php Is anyone using either of these skimmers, or is there another option? Thanks
Aquagold
Was talking with a friend the other day who said to put a positive pressure on the air intake by attaching an air pump/blower. Reckons it increases the efficency.... Anyone heard anything. This was going to be attached to an abalone hatchery though.
wasp
Not quite sure about that particular model Tunze, but Tunze work on the theory that the water should not be completely "stripped", and as a result their skimmers do not remove as much as some other skimmers. The importer of both these skimmers is Reef, you could drop him a pm & ask for a frank opinion on both these skimmers. I'm not sure if he's still logging in to the forum though, if you don't hear back from him in say a couple of days, drop me a pm & I'll give you his contact details. cracker
400 litre system... you should be running something small but with pulling power. deltec 1250 turbo will be perfect. Awesome skimmers..I run two. an AP is too big I reckon and a waste of money.....Im presuming it is more expensive...check with REEF, he will be able to tell you the difference. chimera
for sure AP902 or even 701 too big for that size tank. either 1250 or 1060 would be better. you should be able to pick one up 2nd hand for about $500 - $800 depending on actual model and condition. KP
Thanks, Yeah I was adding in an upgrade factor. Who knows how long it will take to want to go larger than 400L.
ghostface
mate get the biggest deltec you can afford. i got an ap850 for my 750l system, and wish i had gone bigger.... i sometimes get the feeling that it is running at its full capacity and could be pulling out more. as far as noise, the 850 is the noisest thing in my setup though... cracker
skimmer designs are calculated for certain size tanks. overdoing it pointless
suphew
skimmer designs are calculated for certain size tanks. overdoing it pointless Not sure I agree with this, by the time you consider different stocking levels, feeding levels, marketing exagration, quality of and amount of water changes, possible upgrades, etc I think going over size is a very good idea, I dont think you can over skim and you can always turn the air down if your worried about it. chimera
overdoing it pointless unless u r planning to upgrade in the future - as I was when i bought the AP902
lduncan
Bigger is always better.
tel
Bigger is always better. yup, anyone who tells you size doesnt matter probably has a small one. my choice would be Deltec 1st for the size they spec and then go as much larger in their range as you are prepared to spend. some Facts ive noticed in this hobby...1. you will upgrade 2. you will want to swap your ''other brand'' for a Deltec, never the other way around

Feelers
You could try that artic skimmer the jetski's selling - the deltec knockoff one. Its pretty expensive for a copycat though, I'm wanting to see how good it is.
TM
could be a lot abalone 8) Yes this would be right. Well it would be if it is quite alarge skimmer. Even smaller skimmers will benifit from this, depending on the quality of the venturi
ghostface
the general recommendation [with deltecs anyway] is to restrict the amount of air being sucked in by the venturi. surele that means that it has more than enough air available on these particular models. i was forcing air into my old modified queen skimmers, which seemed to help a fair bit. I agree, i skimmers like deltec there may be no need. Queen skimmers, sure this is the only way you can get them to work. But one would assume that the skimmer used on abalone would be huge, like one of the YK2 skimmers. Adding a air pump or blower may really help.
