Fishkeepa
Hello Everybody I was scrounging around my garage today and noticed two large old french doors. Could if i took the glass out from the frame and take it to a glass place ie. smith & smith or kelly glass if it was cut to size could i make a tank with some silicone aquarium sealant? Is this a practical soloution? Are there any problems that frequently arise with this? Thanks for all and any feedback

Ira
Old glass is much harder to cut accurately. I'm sure they'd give it a try, but I doubt they'd garauntee anything.
alanmin4304
In a previous life I used to make the tanks for many of the pet shops in town and in those days it was all second hand glass. Why don't you get one of the locals with some experience to show you how to cut the glass and make a tank. The size will depend on the glass, but it is a handy skill for a fishkeeper to have. It could be a good project for the local fish club.
cookie extreme
glass in it self is cheap. why bother with some old, scratched? in need to clean before using to make a tank? since renovating the house i figured it is much easier, faster and cheaper to do it with new material. Fishkeepa
Does anyone know if it would be cheaper even if i brought new glass?
skuzza
Your tank is the main part of fish keeping so i would go with new glass and maybe make a sump with the old glass. You dont want your tank to break or leak so its not worth taking a chance. My uncle had a tank break years ago and they still havent got round to replacing that carpet.Didnt lose any fish as the noise it make woke them up.Lucky
Ira
Does anyone know if it would be cheaper even if i brought new glass? It depends on where you bring it from and how much you bought it for.
suphew
Are they nice french doors?? Do you know they could be worth heaps at a building recyclers? A friend and I purchased a plain old normal door from the recyclers and it cost about $90, was the cheapest of the size we could find. I also sold them my old kitchen cubboards which were like 40 years old and had been sitting in the rain for a couple of weeks, got $100.
