Warren
Yeah, we all suck at something so should be no-probs. Sorry, no pics. It was years ago and I don't use that system any more. It's a lttle bit difficult when you've only got one tank...
dee_jay_01
Here is what I have discovered so far... * Clear PVC will eventually discolour and become brittle when exposed to light, so he recommended acrylic instead. * 110mm clear acrylic tubing (the diameter suggested in the article) costs about $150 per metre. * 80mm tubing costs about $90 per metre. (That's an external diameter of 80mm, internal 74mm.) * They don't have offcuts because they cut it to length off their big roll. (I had thought I might be able to get offcuts cheaper because I don't need a whole metre - no go! ) * There are no standard elbows or end-caps for this kind of piping so I would need to get PVC plumbing fittings and silicone them on. Hello I dont know what the guy was talking about when he said that Clear PVC would discolor when exposed to too much light  How much light does he think a fish tank puts out, unless you are having this outside in the direct sunlight  I dont think you are??? The PVC pipe will out last the tank before the Tank light or sunlight will kill the PVC What a joke.   I worked in Aquaculture breeding Red Claw Crayfish for local Markets etc, using Clear PVC under water for the red claw to hide in and I know for sure that it will not discolour in less then 10+ years if is cleaned properly. You can go to the local plumbers and get elbows and pipes with threaded ends for about $20 the lot, stick it all together, invert it, fill it with water, and cap the ends. You can put a breather nipple on top so you can suck and air bubbles out but total price would be about $50-$100 with the clear PVC, fittings, with the parts to attach the tubes to the tank. You can clean the lot using pipe cleaners straight up under the water so you dont even have to take it apart, except for a major clean maybe once every six months or more. The best way to entice the Clown loaches up to the pipe would be to place a rocks or ornaments below the pipe with a little cave on top that way they will swim upto the top of the rock or ornament and hopefully swim up the pipes. Just take away any other hiding spot for them so they have to go up there.
whetu
Hello I dont know what the guy was talking about when he said that Clear PVC would discolor when exposed to too much light  How much light does he think a fish tank puts out, unless you are having this outside in the direct sunlight  I dont think you are??? The PVC pipe will out last the tank before the Tank light or sunlight will kill the PVC Thanks for that info, dee_jay! Maybe the guy was just trying to sell me the expensive stuff! I'm definitely not putting the tank outside in the sunlight, or even near a window. So back to the PVC plan! Ooooh you make it sound so easy. Unfortunately I haven't found any clear PVC pipes locally. But then I stopped looking when the guy told me they would get brittle over time. So it's back on the trail of clear PVC pipes! :bounce: Anyone in Kiwiland know where I can get some?
