Caryl
My new cichlid tank is growing algae on the front glass. This doesn't actually worry me but I do have a question. I scrape the algae off and it forms fine sheets. Should I scoop these up in a net or just let the filters suck it in? I know it means I will have to clean the filters out more often but will it actually do any harm?
Oscar Sheila
On the whole algae does not harm your fish, however I would imagine that if it got sucked up into the filter, the algae would probably start to decompose because it no longer has a supply of light. This would of course foul your tank. You can reduce algae by decreasing feedings (because the algae thrive on the wastes produced by your fish), and keeping the tank out of direct sunlight. Ira
I'd scoop it up with a net, if it's not too much trouble. Save you cleaning the filters a bit and a little bit of extra garbage in the tank.
Caryl
I wondered if it would decompose in the filters. The tank does not get any direct light and the fish are not overfed either. I have the lights on a timer and have reduced the time they are on.
Warren
Is it an African tank? If so, then African Cichlids normally like algae. Maybe they will eat it??
Caryl
It is the African tank and the fish do eat it - but not fast enough!
Warren
Maybe add more fish. That will create more algae... I know, add more fish. More algae... More fish... ... ... 8)
