Just wondering about the vodka idea? should i give it a go? ive done a google search, but wanted to put it to you guys, see what yas recommend.

Are many people here using it? would it be benificial to my tank?

Ive got a mate who makes his own spirits and he can make me a solution of water and 40 % alcohol would this be ok?

cheers :hail:

Vodka increases bacteria which will help reduce nutrients. However it also increases bad bacteria which could harm your tank if you dont see the signs to reduce it.

I would leave it for more advanced hobbyist.

You could try Bio digest and biotum, both are bacteria based and will not cause any problems.

So far most people have be impressed with the results.

Here is more info

Thanks Reef,

would the Bio digest or biotum help with reducing cyanobacteria? ive been doing weekly water changes, and sucking alot of it out, and it seems to be slowing down now.

Bio digest will reduce cyno. cyno is normally caused by too many nutrients.

what is the bad bacteria,

Bad bactaria will cause fish disease like fungas etc. i noticed that when i pushed the limits of vodka some of my fish got sick.

So what if i used vodka just to help rid the cyno? would that be ok?.

Its just that i can get this mix for free off my mate, its not vodka but alcohol and water, he can make it vodka by adding the flavour, but i kinda thought it wouldnt be needed.

The cyno seems to be slowing down, now that im doing water changes, maybe i should wait, see if i can get rid of it naturally.

Yeah there are supposed to be problems with adding sugar, perhaps with some interaction with the slime coats of fish/some animals. - which are sugar proteins. (dont quote me on that)

If it were the answer the fresh water hobbyists would probably all dose sugar.
