herefishiefishie
If anyone ever wondered why I ask for scientific names on cichlids then here is one reason. A shop owner here in Qld, was sent some cichlids from Perth. They are meant to be line bred electric yellows. In Perth they call them Yellow Yellow's. (inventive bunch) What do people think these dudes are without checking the rest of the post? What shocked me more is a forum in Canada, that came up during conversation. Hybrids don't concern to much as long as they aren't passed on to others. Why, its to easy for some cichlids to cross breed. I think its best to try & keep what is true. The electric yellows in Australia are average at best. http://www.qldcichlid.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=3334 Frenchy
MRSkz
I admit I'm very new to owning these lovely fish but the first thing that sticks out is the lack of a black on them (dorsal fin and front fins). That is standard with electric yellows isn't it?
Caryl
That was my thought too. Mine all have black edged fins.
malawi_man
they dont look like the lion cove labidochromis caeruleus, maybe you have a different colour varient. they dont really have the electric yellow head shape though so could mean they are crossed with some sort of metriaclima the one in the top right of the picture has the head shape of a metriaclima but all the others are pretty in between, hope this helps
Tanksman
This is an interesting page - sorry bout the lingo - apparently a page from Ad Konings book "Malawi cichlids in their natural habitat". Certainly shows a variety of strains exist in this species. http://www.malawi.cichlids.ru/articles/art051.shtml This thread which was along the same lines as this one seems to be deathly silent since the above link was posted
Freakyfish
I think Justin was inferring these fish are crosses If you look at the large eyes and in the first pic to differences in the body shapes throughout the one group Yes True Electric yellows have the Blark marking though there are some genetic change that have zero black Justin is right if these fish are released in the community the majority of people will breed them with Electric yellows and we lower our quality levels Brad
herefishiefishie
Electric Yellows are meant to have black markings, Yes I do realise that. Buyer beware, Line bred, scientic names were all terms used to suggest I know they are not yellows at all what do u think they could be? :-? Kribs to the top of the class here, send gold star tomorrow. , yep thats right its a hybrid.(IMO) The shop owner who bought these was told they were called Yellow Yellow's. Which in Perth means electric yellows that have no black. They are meant to be Electric yellows line bred against each other, to have an all yellow fish no black markings. Don't know why they would want to do that in the first place. :-? Now if the average joe saw these in the shop they may note the black. The seller will say oh yes these have been line bred to get rid of the black. If the buyer thought I'll have a few I like them. Take sthem home puts them with his elctric yellows, AGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :evil Now people like Krib will go really & go what about the body & head shape, different fin shape, oh also the orange eyes. And the nice bright yellow colour, it isnt, eh bro. Looks like no one went on to read the link either Pretty obvious when placed side by side. Yes Brad it will lower the quality, but some are to late to be safed In Aussie, some (breeder)ba..ard is selling these. Now Canada have prefected the art, What do u think this is??? I remember when Blue peacocks & assorted zebs used to be pretty common in Aussie lfs. We got lucky. A few bright sparks, gave it some thought & smuggled new cichlids into the country, with Genus, species & location/variant attached. Now, Blue zebs/ peacocks have a good home in some LFS's, the freezer or Native display tank. Frenchy

herefishiefishie
The last 3 pics are hybrids too, been breed back to true yellows for so long, they look(shape & colour) like yellows. Frenchy
MRSkz
Then do electric yellows have any markings on there tail? Also do they have what looks to be a faint "stripe" (looks like a fold line really) down the middel of them (from tail to gills)?
