Billaney
I have about 20 young bettas that i've bred , they are now about 1cm -2cm and starting to colour up nicely but how can i sex them at this stage ? Is there a differace in finage or shape or anything ? There has been no aggreasion or anything but want to know the sexes so i can seperate the males before this happens. Please excuse the tank bottom as some of you know i've hurt my neck and can't do much at the momment. Thanks
peanuts
Hi Paul, the reading I have been doing says that when breeding these the agressation doesn't start until after they have been separated and they put back together. but then I haven't breed them so could be wrong..good luck and they look wonderful. cheers Karen
Faran
Not much diff in shape at this stage. Best to let them grow out a bit and start removing the males as you spot them or they start getting agro. Congrats, they're little gems! AMAZONIAN
Hi Paul In all my experience of breeding fighters, I have found that the first "Breakaway " group with regards to size and a bit of pushyness are all going to be males. This has been the case for me over many years, so I suggest you start getting the "Jam Jars" ready. Good luck, they appear to be doing fine and colouring up nicely. AMAZONIAN
Go Paul They are colouring nicely and fat as well. A couple of promising looking females in that lot and it's going to be good finnage on the male. Good luck

AMAZONIAN
The ones that are going to be females are usually striped on the sides. The females NEVER loose their stripes but as the males increase their size the lines fade away. A slightly rounded dorsal on the females is an added check. Thought I would let you have a look at my last spawning 31-01-06, they hatched 2nd Feb. and are already 19mm. Good luck

AMAZONIAN
Hi Tanksman, Please explain to a 61year old wrinkly what a "Nano Pic" is. In my trade as an Electronics Engineer "NANO" is an infintesimal particle. If the reference is to the size of the piccy then please enlighten me as to how to enlarge it for putting them in posts.
Tanksman
Hi amazonian Yeah I was being cheeky  I take Nano to mean small on this forum anyway. If you are a 61 year old wrinkly I commend you on your ability to have got even a nano pic up As to how to fix it and make it bigger so we can actually see what is being photographed - It may be too hard - Just have some dark rum cake instead Seriously - What size images is your camera set for ? try making it larger?? Maybe if you have some photo editing tool like photoshop or picassa (freebie) you could make the images larger before you put them up on photobucket. Good luck - Try adjusting your camera before you make the cake

What are you feeding them on? Lynda they were born on the 2/1/2006 and i feed on a mix of livefood , mozzie lave, frozen bloodworm, microworm and good quality flake. I also tried beef/ox heart but they were not keen.
AMAZONIAN
Hi tanksman Thanks for that. I will try to increase the pix sizes. I already have the camera set to large and best Quality, so I assume it is in my photo host that I will have to alter or edit. Good stuff the "RUM CAKE".  Being ex pussers I can recommend it.
AMAZONIAN
Hi Hope this is a better size pic. Even an old dog "CAN LEARN NEW TRICKS"
alanmin4304
As Amazonian explained you can sex them at this stage so I would be seperating the males out. Put them so they can see each other and this will make them show. This helps with better fin development. It also allows any smaller ones to catch up a bit. Time to think about making the container I described in an earlier thread if you don't like changing water on 127 jars. Nice looking fish.
