Hey folks, I have three oscars im pretty sure a big male and two females. Its looking very much like the male and one of the females are gonna get jiggy! only thing is now the females are fighting(pretty ugly) over territory I guess? never really fought before. Its usualy the male that just cruises around kick'n a bit of butt. would love to hear your thoughts. its a pretty big tank and they have plenty of room, just wondering if the problem will sort itself out? cheers.

Hey tanksman, the tank is about 500ltr 5x2x2. we are just building a schist rock formation to try and separate them a bit in the middle of the tank. the oscars have probably just reached maturity so they are not too big yet. May have to find a home for the odd one out though do you think? cheers for the reply.

Probably be best to find a new home for her but I'm no expert. My thinking on rock formations is that they would be best toward one end so she can hide out of the road in one of the corners maybe? Maybe a tank divider might work short term if your stuck. Do you have some glass? This thread is where Alan tells you how to build one easily.

3 is a very bad number for oscars, 2 normally pair up and the third wheel gets nailed. find her a new home or new tank cause i doubt things will work out. your tank is fine for three IMO, with 300 being minimum for two alone.

how big are they? if they are hitting the 20cm mark or just over it they would be just hitting adolecence and thats why the fighting would be occuring, all hell can break lose once they get to that age, all they seem to want to do is fight :-?

if your 'pair' are not hurting each other it could very well be mating, are they lip locking, shimmying, digging or cleaning rocks? just watch them though because all of those bar the cleaning rocks part means aggression, kinda silly cause fighting and breeding can look the same, youd think theyd be more gentle or something lol

thanks guys. lot of digging and shimmy's going on, the two that we think are pairing may as well be glued together! looks like well have to find a home for one. Does it have to be the odd female out or can it be the one thats pairing, not too sure if I have the space for baby oscars everywhere? (assuming thats whats going on)

keep the pair you most prefer and see if that works out. personally id keep the pair already established together cause they tolerate each other. if you remove one half of the pair the remaning half may still decide it doesnt like the 'third wheel'. really its a trial and error thing, if you decide you want to break the pair up remove the one you want to get rid of to a spare tank, you dont want to get rid of it to find the remaning pair cant stand each other!

oscars can be silly fish sometimes, and if you can get a pair that can tolerate each other thats a bonus! your 'pair' might well be two females, its not uncommon for two to pair up and try and make babies  not so common with males cause most of the time they cant stand each other. only way to tell really is if you get fertile eggs! and even if they are the same sex its still good fun to watch them try. if you do get babies you cant keep alot of LFS will buy them off you, or you could just cull the eggs?

HTH!
