Kookie
What can I buy to protect my tank from cooking, should a heater decide to jam on and keep heating the water??
Luke*
Talk to Alan the moderator, he's knows how to do it, you rig up a (additional?) thermostat to it somehow.
LYNDYLOO
Think you are able to buy some sort of alarm thats tells you when the temp is too hot or too cold, I'm not 100% sure about this, but do think I have read it somewhere. Maybe wait for some more posts to see what other people say, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Lynda

Kookie
I'm more concerned about when I'm not home to hear an alarm or such. Will ask the Mod when I see he is on next.
suphew
I use a temperture contoller, they cost around $120. basically it has a probe that goes in the water, and two normal plugs (power points) that come out of the box, one turns on the heaters, the other a fan or chiller
minchton
dont want to be a wet blanket but two of us bought those monitors and found them to be wildly inaccurate. I had mine in a marine tank and it was set at 30c. It would start going off at 10pm at night yet never went off in the heat of the day. I checked with two other thermometers and found it to be at least 3c out. This was also happening to my mate who purchased one at the same time. I would not say they were a total waste of time as they do at least make you aware of temperature and the need at times to check it by some other means. suphew
Thats interesting, maybe your's is a different brand? I only know of three people with the same brand as mine but all of them are spot on all the time.
Faran
suphew, I think she's talking about the Marina Aqua Minders.... For the record, I have two and they work spot-on. Even dropped one in the tank the other day during a shift and it came right after a quick disassembly to let the moisture evaporate.
Luke*
Now if only it could also control the pH and tell you the levels of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, CO2, carbonate and general hardness, and predict earthquakes then i'd buy one
Caper
Oh Luke...you missed one...the one that tells you the winning lottery numbers
Ira
I found mine to be exactly 1°c higher than all the other thermometers, but other than that offset seemed to work perfectly up until it fell in the tank.
