Duke
KH is 6 ... very low but Calcum and PH are fine. What do I use to raise it and will a low KH affect a anemone?
wasp
Low KH won't bother the anemone, however it's easy to raise just stick some baking soda (not baking powder) in the tank. Dissolve a heaped teaspoon in minimum 1/2 litre fresh water, and pour in to the tank slowly to a high flow area. Give it a few minutes then test to see if you need to add some more. lduncan
I'd give it more than a few minutes before testing. It has to reach hydrogen carbonate / carbonate equilibria first. You could end up adding too much if you test before this happens. Or you can use the calculator here: http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/chem_calc3.html To work out how much baking soda to add based on water volume, current and desired alk level. It should get you close enough to your target number. Layton
wasp
To reach perfect hydrogen carbonate / carbonate equilibria could take 24 hours plus. That's according to Randy Holmes Farley. However the difference in KH is so minescule that for common folks like me and Duke it would not matter. I test after a few minutes. However, I do use baked baking soda, cooked myself, but even with straight baking soda unless adding a huge amount it's not going to matter a whole lot. reef
i see Randy Holmes Farley has a new two part formula for adding calcium/carbonate. Looking to get some made up and try it as i am having real problems keeping up with kh/calcium, they drop so quick. I dont think that baking soda is very potent as you have to add so much to get the kh up. salifert /seachem must be adding something else to there buffers as they seem so much more potent when added.
