They are fine - just another bod taking some more crud outta the water for you. People call big feather dusters flash names and charge big bucks for them! :D

Quite amazing what they turn up on...glass, powerheads...

Buy a copperband butterfly, then they will disappear real quick!

 beeping furry algae  tank now only about 1 month old from end of cycle and real strong furry growth happening. all tests good esp PO4. should i scrub it of rocks or leave it to naturally reduce ? this stuff is brown, furry and getting real long! got a couple of corals in there that may get over run. already done one 25% w/c at 2 weeks to try and help. any suggestions appreciated :-?

There's a few things Tel, but one of the biggies is to skim at max. Whatever crud you can remove = so much less algae. BTW what kind of skimmer do you have?

There is a commonly held view that algae growth is just part of the "cycle", however, I do not subscribe to that. While it is the experience of many, and people eventually resolve it, I don't believe it HAS to happen, if rocks are thoroughly "cooked" in low phosphate water.

You say your phosphate is testing good. In fact, there will be excess phosphate in the tank, if there is not, the algae simply cannot grow. So for us, algae control is all about phosphate control. There are 2 reasons why it is testing good, one is that the existing algae will take any "free" phosphate out of the water to use for growth, and the other is that many test kits do not test down to the low amounts that can sustain algae growth, they just show zero, giving the reefer a false sense of security. This applies even to the well reputed Salifert kit.

There are several things will happen / you can do. Firstly, the situation may well resolve by itself. This is because there may be phosphate stored in your rock and slowly leaching out, which can cause an algae bloom, however, continuous and persistant skimming may gradually get on top of this, provided you do not overfeed, once the spare phosphate reserves are depleted, the algae will die off. However, rather than hope this will happen, a couple of extra things you can do, is use a phosphate removing resin ( expensive though ), or investigate one of the live bacterial dosing systems available, these systems are aimed at dosing bacteria strains designed at reducing algae fuelling nutrient levels in a reef tank. Two systems that are well reputed are Prodibio, and Zeovit, although others may dissagree on that, just my opinion.

Perhaps the cheapest first option, is simply to dose a little vodka into the tank every day. This gives existing bacteria the carbon part of their diet that they need, in order to be able to consume the other part of their diets, which is the excess nutrients in your tank. Then, in theory, the bacteria are skimmed out of the tank, and the nutrients they contain removed with them. I have personally seen, a tank which had chronic hair algae all over, given a large dose of vodka. In a few days the water went white due to the bacterial bloom, the skimmer then went nuts & had to be emptied every few hours, then a few days later the hair algae began to turn white & look sick, and within 2 or 3 weeks, all algae was gone & rocks crisp and white!

Others will have more to add also, Good Luck!

cheers i will take those thoughts on board.

skimmer is a Deltec ts1250 rates ok for my @720lts up till the point i get a fair amount of livestock.(already contemplating a new one) :)

i have scaled back halides to @ 6 hrs /day.

im gonna do 25% w/c every couple weeks for awhile.

im using good PO4 remover.

my rock was entirely dead and uncured with a good whiff!!

currently i have a shrimp, a pr clowns, an anemone, a cple corals and some snails.

what is a good dose of vodka and how often please?does anything eat the brown furry type algae?

Any herbivore such as tangs, lawnmower blenny, snails, will have an effect, but mostly not eradicate it completely, although sometimes lawnmower blennies can do a good job, other times not.

Vodka can do harm if overdosed, so start at 1 ml per hundred litres water, 2 time daily. This is a minimal dose and should be done for 1 week. If no effect, increase by another ml 2 times daily, for another week. Each week add another ml twice daily to the dose, until you reach a level that is working for your tank. Observe livestock, in particular mushrooms for adverse reaction, and scale back dosing if need be. Keep skimming hard :D

Tel Ive tried vodka, about 1.5 ml tp my 130 ltr tank daily, nitrates went to zero in about a week and a half, and my cyno nearly all gone( alittle bit around the base of base rock). Ive knocked the dose back to 1ml a day, and will keep knocking it back till i dont have to use it. I will see how my tank reacts.

because you rock was uncured and dead you have to expect a long period of algae. all the above will help but you still have to go through the process.

keep a close eye on your anenome they are one of the more difficult animals to keep and generally not recommended to go in new tanks. it might be ok, but i would have a backup plan, i.e. see if there is someone near by who will put it in their tank for a few months.

the tangs were supposed to be 1 x yellow and 1 x blue...until i saw a purple one  ...left the blue out, but Jansens have got some real cute looking blues..so tiny they almost look like a different fish, (quite short fat bodies) :)
