beachy
Hey all, tank is now going through the cycle nicely. Ammonia is zero, and nitrite has risen to 0.50 and has been that way for a while now. I have a milky film on the surface of the water that i cant seem to get rid of, i have tried breaking the surface with a powerhead, but it doesnt seem to do much. Does anyone know what this is caused by? will it be an ongoing thing, i was thinking of purchasing a surface skimmer. Also all the coral in my tank is now covered in a brown algae, i have read that this is just part of the cycle, true?, or is it to do with seting up with tap water, as i did? Thanks heaps

Alan
If you were to drag a sheet of paper across the surface, that should remove it. We freshies use this method, and I'm told it is a build up of proteins. Do you have a skimmer?? Alan
beachy
thats the benefit of having an overflow to a sump Yea my last tank had an overflow, my tank before didnt, i wish i had one now  Never mind, i might purchase a surface skimmer and hook it up to a canister with filter wool, and only use it when i get this problem. I used to have a surface skimmer on my old freshwater setup, they can be a real pain. both. part of the cycle yes, thats why best not to add too much too soon. topping up with tap water is highly likely (being akl water) to make it worse Cool thanks, ive been topping up with deep blue pure water, a small bottle has lasted me over a week, prob not efficient but it will do till i can afford a RODI. Ira
mountain dew - - - vodka. What's the diff Alan 104 Mountain dew is nothing like vodka. Vodka=alcohol. Mountain Dew= Antifreeze.
