i have a green and a gold severum in a cichild community tank and they have layed eggs a few times but the eggs have been eaten :(

i was wondering if they would be ok to breed in a 40l tank with a heater and just a bio filter(the grey foam ones)?

also what else can i do to help them start spawing?

thanks for any help

ok so would the severums live in a tank with a jag(they wouldnt fit in his mouth).

so is the 40l tank going to be ok to spawn in?

what would be the best temp for the tank?

do they need anything to lay the eggs on like a clay pot or anything?

What colour would the babys be if one of the parents is gold and one green?

is there anything that i can put in the tank to stop the eggs going white(and what makes them go white  )

thanks

Hi there, you could try a piece of Marley spouting placed in the tank on an angle, and they may or maynot spawn on that, sometimes the eggs that have turned white, mean that these have not been fertilised, and sometimes they will get fungus.

Not sure what colour the bubba's would be, you will just have to wait and see.

do you have access to a larger spawning tank? reason being unless they get down to business fairly quick it would be quite cramped, also unless you want to have a go at looking after your own fry youd want to leave them with the parents, and the wrigglers would most certanly fall prey to the jag!!

how bout dividing the tank up? have a look at alans post in the discus baby post, good way there and that way no bubbas can get through! that way theyd have alot of room and wouldnt have to get stressed from moving tanks etc. do a google search on breeding sevs, should get some helpful tips and info

I'm seeing pretty much exactly the same thing from my Severums. They lay eggs fairly regularly, but the eggs turn white in a day or so, and the next day they're all gone. It doesn't look like fungus on the eggs, they just go opaque.

They have raised one brood to free swimming fry, so I know I've got a fertile pair, they just don't seem to be getting it right at the moment.

I'm as interested as Quack in any advice :)
