Doubie
Hi all, I am wondering if anyone can let me know where I can obtain some Daphnia to start a culture - tried to get some up from Wellington, but they did not survive the trip. Auckland location preferred and happy to pay fair price. Many thanks
Alan
Try looking in some troughs on local farms. But do ask permission first tho. I use to check out the troughs thru One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park, when I lived in Jafa-land. There were a couple of good ones too, but you'll have to find them. 8) Alan
alanmin4304
I went down the river to get some oxygen weed to feed to my turtles. After rinsing it clean I left it to drain and when I picked it up there were daphnia sitting there. Suggest you get a fine net and run it through some weed in a stream and empty the contents into clean water. You can pick the daphnia by the way they swim and you only need a few to start a culture. I got a pipette from the chemist which is like a large eye dropper (used for measuring baby medicines)and you can pick out the food you want from a culture. You can buy them as "pure cultures" but if you keep them outside you will end up with mossies and blood worms etc as well. All good tucker. I spent ages trying to get hold of a culture and I was probably washing it down the drain each time I went to get weed.

Luke*
Best to keep them outside too as they need a lot of oxygen

Pegasus
Never known Daphnia to be found in a "river".. they are static water inhabitants.. We used to collect it on a regular basis in the UK.. on often you would see farm ponds that were just one huge mass of pinky red.. with Daphnia so thick you could almost walk across the pond on them They say that the lakes at Western Springs have an abundance of them.. might be worth a family day trip. They consume tons of air.. so don't overstock the containers if you happen to get some. We used to use battery pumps till we got them home.. but even then, the losses were great. Also watch out for other nasties that hang around the same areas. Good luck. Bill.
Doubie
Thanks all for the help. Probably why they don't travel well (when bought from Trademe) when I am hearing they consume lots of Oxygen! Cheers
