Feelers
So whats the deal with buying ethanol? I went to Clarkes Chemicals and they said I wasnt allowed to buy it from them, they mentioned something about fisheries, cant remember exactly. Struck me as rather silly beaucracy - I distill my own, its just that this is cheaper, - they have no problems selling 50kg of potassium nitrate to high school kids. What a wonderfull world. Anything on their chemical list anyone can buy - but not ethanol. Where have you guys tried? If you say its for filtration in a reef tank is that a good enough reason? Personally I want to make drinks out of it, homemade Midori is fantastic.
slappers
so you have to put smaller amounts of ethanol in supposed to vodka
Feelers
Well, I don't really know too much about vodka, I think some cheap stuff may have sugar, but it should just be ethanol and water (40% ethanol is normal vodka eg Absolute) And the max you can buy ethanol is 96% or thereabouts?. So just adjust it by multiplying it by 0.416666 if you have the 96% stuff.
slappers
with the vodka i was putting in i cap aday or 1ml per 100ltrs
Feelers
I think the vodka method isnt really too strict on the quantity of vodka you put in - slappers, I was under the impression that you start with 1ml per day, then take it up slowly to 5mls per day. Somewhere there is a thread possibly by Wasp? that goes into more detail. Ill try and find it. If you use vodka I would start off at 1ml /100L and then increase by 1ml every day. After a month you should notice nitrate dropping so it is advised that you start reducing the vodka otherwise you acropora will get RTN due to them basically eating themselves due to no nutrients in the tank. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt9464.html?start=0 , Slappers its in your thread
