wasp
Here's a pic of this weed, what is it? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/ ... g/weed.jpg [mod=cees]img tags removed, file too large, see http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/linkin ... t8669.html [/mod] It came in on some coral, looked real unhealthy so I thought it would die, so I left it. But now, although still looking unhealthy, has spread and is now on several rocks. It's pretty ugly and looks like it could end up covering everything. What is it? And what should I do? cookie extreme
looks like dictyota sp. if it is beware. will out compete corals in any way. no fish seems to eat it. can live in really bad water and light. it grows quickly and spreads fast into a real plague. has a preference for hard substrate i.e. coral skeleton, rocks etc and once established its hard to beat. wasp
Oh Thanks for the great info. That will spur me into action. It's not gone so far yet that I can't get the affected rocks out and do the boiling water thing. Might as well do it once & do it right. BTW, it's ugly

wasp
Well thought I'd stay up late & get one of the 2 patches done, when I took the rocks out I've found this stuff has crept and crawled much further than I thought! Done it with boiling water but it was right across the base of some corals so I know I've damaged some corals. But didn't want any residue in the rock pores so had to be thorough. Still got the other patch to do but enough for tonight. Anyhow it came in on some of those Bali aquacultured corals, I'd recommend anyone whose got them just check for this stuff. I think once it really got established in a tank it would be almost impossible to get rid of and I think it could entirely take over a tank.
