Hi everyone I just came back from going away for the night and noticed one of my female dwarf cockatoo's is looking a bit worse for wear.. I haven't had her all that long and shes never looked 100% but has always eaten etc..

Anyway shes always been really fat and been breathing heavily ever since ive had her (ive only had her 3 weeks) but now shes off her food looks alot fatter and it looks like she cant swim very well her tail seems to float her up if you can understand what im saying.. her scales are also sticking out when viewed from above. From what I can tell shes probably going to die, does anyone have any suggestions for what I could do to possible cure her, or more importantly anything I can do to prevent anything else in the tank getting what shes got. At the moment everyone else is looking fine but I dont want to loose anything else.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Keep your eyes open for another to replace her.

Sorry,

From your discription the fish has dropsy and is not worth mucking around with.

Next time you purchase one, take your time and watch them in the LFS tank before you buy.

They aren't cheap so that for a starter makes the obsevation worthwhile..

I was in an LFS the other day, and a guy was going to buy some BN but they were in a tank with about 20 plus platy, and I considered that if they were lucky, only five would be alive the next day.

When the server went to get a bag to put the purchase into, I pointed out my fears to the buyer.

He hadn't even noticed.

I suggested to him to say he was really after bigger ones and that he'd check the other shops.

This he did, and prolly saved himself the possibility of wiping out his own tank.

Moral of the story??

Check the tank inhabitants before you buy, and quarantine your purchase for at least a week on taking them home.

By the way, Q. that female, but I'm about 99.5% sure that it will die from that malady.

Sorry.

Cheers alan

I was pretty sure she was a gonner, I haven't seen any come back when the scales start sticking out.. Is there anything I can do to make sure the other occupants dont all die as well? Is dropsy anything to do with poor water conditions etc or is there anything I can stick in the tank to kill it before it affects anything else? Or should I just keep up with the water changes and good housekeeping and hope that everyone else is happy and healthy enough to keep it at bay..

I was foolish to bring her home without quarantine and hopefully I dont learn my lesson by loosing the rest of the tank.. lol in the mean time ill have to hunt around for another double/tripple red female as she was going to be used to breed with my orange flashes to see what she produced..

Get in touch with Caserole he has Apistos.

Not normaly contagious, but don't leave in the tank to die and then the others dine out on it.

You may be in trouble then.

If I was you, I'd take it outside and pretend your Brett Lee bowling a bouncer.

I understand it is tank conditions and something to do with the liver.

Just carry on with the aquarium water changes and cleaning.

Don't need any medication.

It is caused by kidney problems that cause fluid retention. You can treat with salt and or epsom salts but it only reduces the fluid a bit and doesn't get to the original problem which can be many and varied. I had 2 males and one female and both males died within a day of each other and they were in different tanks. The female is still healthy as. PERISHABLE GOODS.

Thank you 2 very much for you help you seem to both have input on most of the posts on here and im sure im not the only one that appreciates your experience and input.

I wish the outcome was more positive for this fish but it looks like its not the case and I think the damage was done before I got her.. Looks like im on the look out for another female cockatoo..

Anyway thanks again for your help the fish is in quarantine but she doesn't look too good and I think I will just do was suggested and put her out of her misery..
