stagger lee
Oh dear... When i got home tonight i noticed there was only 1 striata loach swimming around tank number 2. there is only a pair of those loaches and William the red tailed shark living in that tank and the loaches always get around together. So i thouight 'ah oh' and started to tear the tank apart... i watched the remaining loach swim into the out take gap of the shark filter which surprised me... got crap everywhere pulling that thing apart but no fish. So then i got out a mirror and torch and peered down the gap at the back between tank and wall (the tank is sitting in a cavity on the old wood stove top under chimney) and i am pretty sure there was a little dusty fish shape back there Poor wee bugger, don't know why he jumped. They seemed to like William, followed him everywhere and there was only the smallest gap under the lid for the cords and CO2 tube... I remember reading a similar story on this site not too long ago but i searched and couldn't find it again - someone made a real helpful suggestion on how to block that gap up but i can't rember what it was? Any suggestions appreciated SL
Caryl
Since I assume you didn't find a suicide note I am afraid you will never know why he jumped Fill the gaps with filter wool (dacron)
Warren
Red tailed sharks love to chase other fish. They can also get quite nasty when they get adult sized. It's possible the loach was being chased. I used to keep rtbs's when I had a community tank and ended up of-loading them as they caused too many problems. They're ok while small and have much better colour but once they grow up... It might be I've just had a bad run with them but then again I beleive it's a fairly well know character trait. Luke*
Agreed Warren, I use to get them quite frequently as a 'centre fish' but they just bug all the other fish all the time whereas they seem quite placid at the LFS. The suggestion may have been to use hose, split lengthways and hung over the edge of the tank...Alan the mod uses this idea.
stagger lee
Thanks for the advice regarding blocking the hole. I am aware of the aggressive nature of red tailed sharks. William is still quite small/young and has been living alone in his own tank until i recently bought the loaches. I want to be careful what i get to live with Will and have read several reports on the internet that RTS will happily get along with clowns so thought i would give the striata's a try. They have been quite comical, all 3 would school together or the loaches would follow William around. He certainly seemed to like the company, and i have been watching them quite closely just in case... Well, good excuse to go to the LFS this weekend i suppose. LYNDYLOO
If it was the post I'm thinking about, the advice was to run a piece of garden hose that had been sliced down one side and to place that over the edge of the glass at the top of the tank, then you place the tank lid on top of the hose. Hope this was the one you were looking for. Lynda :bounce:
