Feelers
When I say Chineese manufacturing, I dont mean "good" brands that are based somewhere else but get them built in China, I mean brands like Jebo, or Jebao ect. I definately think it will happen, especially given the counterfitting economy, From the cheap imitation products I have seen myself, they all do quite well. Ira
Ira, which model do you have....a couple of models have reversible motors...this will more than likely be the cause. It's an MCE600, I check that little flap every time I clean it and it seems to be working fine. Sounds like it needs to be set correctly. That's possible. Its a bit like someone telling me there is something wrong with a salifert test kit and finding out that it was used incorrectly Please don't ever mention that again.
Jimmy
So reef, If some of the chinese manufacturing for skimmers gets better would you be willing to put somthing on the line? maybe drink a cup of skimate? Because that is a very risky thing to say that they will not get any better than they are.

And.....If you turn the switch on the skimmer on and off slowly while checking the performance, you will notice the skimmer bubbles up hard at one time and bugger all the next time. (The air tap needs to be fully open while doing this). If you see no difference and it is bubbling profusely, the flap is ok. If you see it changing , you either should remove the flap or flick the switch each time to get it right.

I gave the whole skimmer a clean, ran the pump in the sink for half an hour or so with the venturi hose sucking in water, had a play with the adjustment nozzle while it was in there and sucking air. I didn't realize the dramatic difference in the amount of water it pumps with the nozzle wide open vs mostly closed. Flap was perfectly fine, btw. So, after I reassembled everything I thought I'd try finding where the flow of the pump(By watching the level of the water in the outlet) starts to dramatically drop off and try adjusting the air valve around that point. Seems that I get the most bubbles setting it just slightly open past where the water flow starts to nosedive. That's about the 1:30 position. We'll see how it goes now...
