GeeTee
I was just wondering what is considered a high temperature for cichlids. I have a smaller quarantine tank with a couple in it and it is at 30 deg c and it MAY still be climbing slowly. I put some ice in today but in was only a small amount and didn't make much difference. monaro1
i had a heater get stuck on a while ago and the temp got to 35, dont know for how long but it took two days to cool, didnt lose any fish. 30 should not be a problem but would not want it to get mutch higher for a long time. why is the temp still climbing
alanmin4304
The main thing with high temperatures is to increase the airation as the higher the temperature the less O2 water will carry.
GeeTee
Thanks guys, the tank has an air pump on it so should be ok then.
herefishiefishie
Depends on the cichlid, americans can handle the higher heat. Tangy's don't like it over 29 degrees, people here lose these guys in summer here. Malawis bit tougher than Tangys, but I still wouldn't keep the temp at 30. try and get the temp down to 27. JoandWilly
I find that if you turn then heater down to about 24 over the summer the tanks still sit at about 27... if your having heaps of probs take the lid off and put a fan blowing over the water... you'll just have to watch for evapouration. Caryl
Turning a heater down does nothing in this case. The water will heat up to the room temperature. If your room sits at 27C then you could turn the heater down or off, the water will still rise to 27C - same as the room.
GeeTee
Yes I have had the heater off for a number of weeks now, only turning it on for a cold snap. I can move them back into the main tank and keep an eye on them from there.Better than dying. Could try to talk the good wife in to bringing it in from the garage.Might be easier just to put them in the main tank. Thanks again
Caryl
What is the point of turning off the heater? If the water is warm enough it won't turn on anyway.
